Introduction to KTW-BWGL Certification

KTW-BWGL is a mandatory assessment standard developed by the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) for plastics and other organic materials in contact with drinking water. This standard was released on March 21, 2019 and officially came into effect on March 21, 2021, gradually replacing the original KTW directive and integrating European drinking water regulations.

This certification requires that facilities or materials and products used for the production, processing, or transportation of drinking water must not pose a threat to human health, must not have a negative impact on the odor and taste of water, and the quality of substances released into drinking water must not exceed unavoidable limits.

The risks of categories P1 to P4 in this certification are mainly determined by the size of the contact area between the product and drinking water. The limit value is given as a percentage of the total contact area, and the relationship between the risk category and the sealing gasket is as follows:
P1- High surface contact (≥ 10%): This category of products (such as tanks and pipelines) has a relatively large surface area in contact with drinking water. The risk of potential material migration is relatively high.
P2- Moderate surface contact (<10%): This category includes products with a large but not excessively large surface area in contact with drinking water. Sealing gaskets usually belong to this category. Its meaning is clear: caution must be exercised when selecting sealing materials to ensure compliance with P2 certification standards.
P3- Low surface contact (<1%): For products with small or brief contact areas such as gaskets, they may be classified as P3. Although such products may not require formula testing, the size of the contact area still needs to be considered.
P4- Extremely small surface contact (e.g.<0.1%): In this category, the surface in contact with drinking water is extremely small and may include situations where the contact time is very short. Materials classified as P4 may not require formula review.
