Storage requirements for hazardous materials in chemical reagent cabinets
Date: 2025-06-12Read: 1
The chemical reagent cabinet is the core link of laboratory safety management, and its storage method directly affects personnel safety, environmental protection, and the reliability of experimental data. The following systematically elaborates on the scientific storage requirements for hazardous materials from the perspectives of classification management, container selection, placement standards, safety protection, emergency measures, etc.
1、 Classification and Identification of Dangerous Goods
1. Store by nature classification
-Flammable liquids/solids (such as ethanol, sodium): Keep away from heat and fire sources, store in fireproof cabinets or metal cabinets, and keep the temperature inside the cabinet ≤ 25 ℃.
-Oxidizing agents (such as potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide): isolated from reducing agents and organic solvents to avoid violent reactions.
-Corrosive substances (such as sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide): stored separately in corrosion-resistant material (PP, PE) cabinets, equipped with leak proof trays.
-Toxic substances (such as mercury and arsenic compounds): stored in a sealed environment, labeled with a "highly toxic" warning on the cabinet, and managed by two people with double locks.
-Explosive materials (such as nitrocellulose): Storage in conventional reagent cabinets is prohibited, and a dedicated explosion-proof warehouse is required.
2. Labeling and Identification System
-Use internationally recognized symbols (such as skull, flame, corrosion icon) to indicate the hazard category, and the label should include the name, concentration, hazard information, and responsible person.
-Post a list of "Hazardous Chemicals Catalogue" on the cabinet door, and label it according to the area division (such as "Acidic Corrosive Products Area" and "Flammable Organic Solvent Area").
2、 Container selection and packaging specifications
1. Material adaptability
-Plastic containers are prohibited for strong oxidants (which may cause combustion), and glass or stainless steel bottles are recommended.
-Hydrofluoric acid should be stored in polyethylene bottles and avoid using glass or ceramic containers.
-Volatile reagents should be stored in brown glass bottles away from light and sealed with rubber gaskets.
2. Secondary protective measures
-All containers must be equipped with leak proof sealing covers, and volatile liquids should be sealed with paraffin oil.
-Wrap the bottle mouth with Parafilm film or aluminum foil to prevent evaporation or moisture absorption.
-Large storage tanks are equipped with anti-seepage trays (with a capacity of ≥ 110% of the tank volume), which are attached with adsorbent materials (such as diatomaceous earth).
3、 Rules for Placing in Cabinets
1. Partition and layering principle
-Vertical layering: heavy reagents (such as concentrated sulfuric acid) and spare gas cylinders are placed at the bottom layer; The middle layer is commonly used reagents; The upper layer stores lightweight or small items.
-Horizontal zoning: Physically isolate according to hazard categories, such as acidic corrosive substances on the left, alkaline reagents on the right, and toxic substances stored on the back.
-Taboo combination isolation: Oxidants and reducing agents (such as potassium permanganate and acetone), acids and bases (such as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide) must not be adjacent.
2. Special item management
-Reactive metals such as sodium and potassium need to be immersed in mineral oil and stored in a dry inert gas environment.
-Radioactive isotopes need to be shielded in lead cans, and the cabinet should be labeled with radiation warning signs.
-Reagents that react with water (such as calcium carbide) should be stored in a nitrogen filled dryer and must not come into contact with humid air.
4、 Cabinet safety design and environmental control
1. Cabinet material and structure
-Priority should be given to selecting 304 stainless steel or flame-retardant polypropylene (PP) materials, which have good sealing properties for door seams.
-Explosion proof cabinets must be certified by FM/ATEX and equipped with anti-static grounding clips.
-Reserve ventilation openings at the bottom (aperture ≤ 1mm) to prevent the accumulation of volatile gases.
2. Environmental monitoring
-Install a temperature and humidity meter to control the temperature between 15~25 ℃ and humidity ≤ 60% (to avoid deliquescence or volatilization).
-Flammable and explosive cabinets are equipped with gas sensors (such as VOC detectors) and linked exhaust systems.
-Store photosensitive reagents (such as silver nitrate) in the dark, and install blackout curtains on the cabinet.
5、 Safe operation and emergency preparedness
1. Personnel protection and operating standards
-Wear protective clothing and goggles when storing and retrieving reagents, and do not operate highly toxic or explosive substances alone.
-Adhere to the principle of "first in, first out", regularly check the expiration date of reagents, and promptly dispose of deteriorated products (such as oxidized and discolored FeSO ₄).
-Prohibit simultaneous retrieval and storage operations within the same cabinet to reduce cabinet opening time.
2. Emergency facility configuration
-The emergency tool kit (including absorbent cotton, neutralizing agent, fireproof blanket, and gas mask) is stored in a fixed position inside the cabinet.
-Corrosive leaks should be neutralized with sodium bicarbonate or lime, while organic leaks should be covered with sand.
-CO ₂ or dry powder fire extinguishers shall be equipped. It is prohibited to use water or foam fire extinguishers for metal fires.
6、 Maintenance and supervision mechanism
1. Regular inspection
-Check the sealing and label integrity of the container weekly, and clean the dust and leakage residue inside the cabinet monthly.
-Inspect the anti-corrosion performance and ventilation system of the cabinet every year, and replace aging sealing strips.
2. Digital management
-Establish an electronic ledger to record the names, quantities, storage locations, and usage logs of reagents.
-High risk reagents are subject to double person acceptance and double lock management, and are connected to the laboratory safety monitoring system.
