The application of digital potentiometers is extensive, and there are many types according to different classification standards, but the basic principles are similar. Here, taking the digital potentiometer X9313 with a three wire add/subtract interface as an example, we will introduce the application of digital potentiometers.
2.1 Internal Structure and Working Principle
X9313 is an industrial grade 32 tap CNC potentiometer with a maximum resistance of 10k Ω. It uses 8 pins and comes in three packages: DIP, OIC, and FSSOP. The internal functional block diagram of X9313 is shown in Figure 3. It consists of an input section, a 5-bit E2PROM, storage and call circuits, a 32 select decoder, a 32 channel analog switch composed of MOSFETs, and a resistor array. The input part is a 5-bit up/down counter connected to the microcontroller through a three wire up/down interface, which works like an up/down counter. The output is decoded and controlled to turn on an electronic switch, thus connecting a point on the resistor array to the sliding output terminal. The resistor array consists of 32 equivalent resistors and their corresponding electronic switches. According to the voltage level of the control terminal, the contents of the counter can also be stored in non-volatile memory for future use.
