How to achieve low-temperature grinding with planetary ball mill
Date: 2022-12-06Read: 0

Some samples in the laboratory often need to control the upper temperature limit before grinding due to their physical and chemical properties, in order to prevent any changes in their properties. During the operation of the planetary ball mill, the grinding balls in the ball mill tank undergo high-frequency impacts and strong friction, generating a large amount of heat and affecting the sample.

To maintain the low-temperature operation of planetary ball mills, certain methods need to be used. Below are three commonly used methods in planetary ball mills to cool down the ball mill tank.

Introduction to Three Methods for Low Temperature Operation of Planetary Ball Mill

1. Pre freezing of ball mill jar

Since the sample is ground in a ball mill jar, we can pre freeze the jar before grinding, such as placing it in a liquid nitrogen environment for cooling, and then loading the sample for grinding. This way, the ball mill jar can be controlled within a certain temperature range.

However, this method is only suitable for rapid grinding for a few minutes, otherwise as the grinding time increases, the temperature of the ball milling jar will gradually rise.

2. Connect refrigerant gas to the working area to create a low-temperature environment

The working part of the planetary ball mill is a large wheel with four ball milling tanks rotating. We can cover the working part with a cooling cover and then introduce refrigerant gas (such as liquid nitrogen) into the cooling cover to keep the ball milling tanks in a continuously low temperature environment.

Due to the low temperature around the ball milling jar, the heat generated inside the jar will slowly dissipate, thereby achieving the effect of cooling inside the jar. However, the walls of the ball milling jar are often thick, and this method has low cooling efficiency and cannot control temperature in real time. The actual use effect is average, and it is only suitable for some samples with less strict requirements for grinding temperature.

3. Using Dongfang Tianjing's specially designed temperature controlled ball milling jar

In fact, cooling the tank body is a more direct and effective method. To solve the problem of wall thickness affecting the cooling effect, the Dongfang Tianjing temperature controlled ball milling tank can be used. This type of ball milling jar has a sandwich layer between the inner core and the outer shell, which can be continuously filled with anhydrous ethanol during sample grinding to remove the heat generated by the ball milling jar and reduce the temperature of the jar.

The temperature controlled ball milling jar reduces the contact distance between the refrigerant and the heat source, and uses water cooling, a more effective cooling method, to truly achieve real-time temperature control during the grinding process.

That's all for the introduction of three methods for low-temperature operation of laboratory planetary ball mills. For users who need low-temperature grinding samples, they may refer to the above methods.
