Many users have common misconceptions and pit avoidance guidelines regarding the selection of HF and fluoride containing samples
Misconception 1: Measuring Low Concentration HF with Conventional Glass pH Electrode
The glass film of conventional glass electrodes will be slowly eroded by fluoride ions, even at low concentrations of HF, which will gradually increase measurement errors (such as pH drift of ± 0.2 or more), leading to electrode failure in the short term and increasing replacement costs. It is recommended to directly choose anti fluoride specialized electrodes.
Misconception 2: Believing that "anti fluoride electrodes are universal for all HF systems"
There are clear limitations on the tolerance concentration of different fluoride resistant electrodes, and modified fluoride resistant glass electrodes are only suitable for low concentration HF. If used in high concentration systems, there may be a "one week failure" situation; Although the lanthanum fluoride crystal film electrode has a wide range of applications, attention should be paid to its stability in strong alkaline HF mixed systems (such as HF+NaOH), and the compatibility should be confirmed with the manufacturer in advance.
Misconception 3: Neglecting the fluoride resistance at the interface between the reference liquid and the liquid
Some users only focus on the sensitive membrane material, but ignore the corrosion resistance of the reference electrode - if the reference solution is a KCl solution containing chloride ions, fluoride ions will react with silver ions in the reference solution (if it is a silver chloride reference electrode) to generate AgF precipitation, blocking the liquid interface and causing the electrode to malfunction. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a dedicated anti fluoride reference solution (such as an organic electrolyte solution without chloride ions), or directly use an integrated anti fluoride pH electrode (pre filled with a suitable reference solution by the manufacturer).
Misconception 4: Pursuing "high price=high performance"
Some brands' anti fluoride electrodes have inflated prices, but their core materials are actually the same as those of ordinary brands. When selecting, material parameters can be compared (such as whether it is pure lanthanum fluoride crystal film and whether the shell material is PFA).
Summary: IncludingHFThe "three-step" strategy for selecting medium pH electrodes
1. Clarify the core parameters of the operating conditions: first determine the HF concentration, temperature, pressure, and whether it is a mixed system, and define the electrode material boundary (modified anti fluorine glass or lanthanum fluoride crystal film);
2. Matching electrode performance and structure: Select parameters such as response time, temperature compensation, and shell material based on the measurement scenario (laboratory/industrial, intermittent/continuous) to avoid functional redundancy;
3. Avoiding selection errors: Prioritize the use of specialized anti fluorine electrodes and matching reference liquids, reject conventional glass electrodes, and do not blindly pursue high priced products. The core principle is "material adaptation+scene matching".
Through scientific selection, the problems of electrode corrosion, short lifespan, and data drift in pH measurement of HF containing media can be effectively solved, ensuring measurement accuracy and stability and reducing operation and maintenance costs. If there are doubts about the selection of specific working conditions, it is recommended to provide detailed parameters for consultation with the electrode manufacturer's technical support to obtain customized solutions.
