How often does a multi-channel pipette need to be calibrated?
Date: 2025-06-17Read: 2

The calibration cycle of the multi-channel pipette should be determined based on the specific frequency of use and accuracy requirements of the laboratory. Generally speaking, it is recommended to perform calibration every 3-12 months. Here are specific suggestions:

1. Regular calibration cycle
Every 3-6 months: For frequently used multi-channel pipettes, especially those used daily or in high-precision experiments, it is recommended to calibrate them every 3-6 months.
Every 6-12 months: If the frequency of use is low or the pipette is mainly used for general experiments, calibration can be considered every 6-12 months.
2. Special circumstances
High precision experiments: If the experiment requires high pipetting accuracy (such as molecular biology, drug development, etc.), it is recommended to calibrate more frequently, even quarterly.
Use corrosive liquids: If the pipette is frequently used to handle corrosive liquids, the calibration cycle should be shortened and it is recommended to calibrate every 3 months.
After repair: After each repair, the pipette must be recalibrated to ensure its performance meets the requirements.
3. Calibration method
Internal calibration: The laboratory can perform calibration on its own, but it requires corresponding equipment (such as high-precision scales, anti evaporation traps, etc.) and standard operating procedures.
External calibration: The pipette can also be sent to a professional calibration institution for calibration, which usually provides a calibration certificate to ensure the traceability of the calibration results.
4. Calibration standards
ISO 8655: This is an international standard that specifies the calibration requirements for pipettes, including calibration methods, environmental conditions, and equipment requirements.
ISO 17025: For laboratories that require certification, ISO 17025 provides higher calibration standards to ensure the accuracy and traceability of calibration results.
5. Daily maintenance
Cleaning and maintenance: Regularly clean the pipette to avoid contamination and blockage. It is recommended to clean and maintain it every 3 months.
Record calibration results: After each calibration, detailed information such as calibration date, calibration personnel, pipette model, range setting, actual volume taken, error value, etc. should be recorded for traceability.
In short, the calibration cycle of multi-channel pipettes should be flexibly adjusted according to the frequency of use and experimental requirements to ensure that the pipettes are always in good working condition, thereby improving the accuracy and reliability of experimental results.
