Detailed explanation of the working principle of synchronous thermal analyzer: how to simultaneously achieve thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis
Date: 2025-10-27Read: 1
Synchronous thermal analyzer is a multifunctional thermal analysis instrument that integrates thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) or differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Its core is to obtain the thermogravimetric and differential thermal information of the sample simultaneously in a single experiment through synchronous measurement technology, achieving comprehensive analysis of material thermal properties.
Working Principle:
The synchronous thermal analyzer precisely controls the temperature of the sample through a heater, causing physical and chemical changes to occur during the heating, cooling, or constant temperature process of the sample. During this process, the detector system equipped with the instrument monitors two key parameters in real-time:
Thermogravimetric signal (TG): A high-precision thermogravimetric balance is used to measure the variation of sample mass with temperature or time, revealing the physical and chemical properties of the sample such as thermal stability, decomposition process, redox reaction, etc. For example, the temperature range and composition ratio of material dehydration, decomposition, or volatilization can be determined through TG curves.
Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA/DSC): Differential thermal analysis measures the temperature difference between a sample and a reference substance, reflecting changes in the thermal effect of the sample; Differential scanning calorimetry directly measures the heat flux difference between the sample and the reference material to obtain thermal properties such as melting, crystallization, phase transition, and reaction heat. For example, DSC curves can accurately locate the glass transition temperature or reaction enthalpy of materials.
The key to synchronous implementation:
The instrument adopts a dual detector integrated design, and the thermogravimetric balance and differential scanning calorimetry module share the same heating system and sample environment to ensure consistency in temperature programs. The detector synchronously converts the mass change and thermal effect signal into an electrical signal, amplifies and filters it, and outputs it to the computer to generate a TG-DTA or TG-DSC joint curve. This design eliminates the accumulation of errors in step-by-step testing, significantly improving data correlation and analysis efficiency.
Technical advantages:
The synchronous thermal analyzer can obtain comprehensive information on the thermal stability, thermal decomposition kinetics, and phase transition behavior of materials through one experiment. It is widely used in material research and development, quality control, and failure analysis, providing efficient and accurate technical means for optimizing material properties.
