Calibration method for waterproof thermometer
Date: 2025-08-25Read: 1
The calibration of waterproof thermometers is a key step in ensuring their measurement accuracy, especially suitable for scenarios such as laboratories, industries, medical or outdoor environments that require waterproof performance. The following are detailed calibration methods and precautions:
1、 Preparation before calibration
Select calibration environment
A temperature stable environment (such as a constant temperature box, water bath, or standard temperature source), avoiding airflow, direct sunlight, or heat source interference.
The waterproof thermometer needs to be fully immersed in the liquid for calibration, ensuring that the liquid depth is sufficient to cover the sensor part.
Prepare standard thermometer
Using certified reference thermometers (such as platinum resistance thermometers, precision digital thermometers), their accuracy should be 2-3 times higher than that of the calibrated thermometer.
Check the validity period and calibration certificate of the standard thermometer.
Check the waterproof performance
Confirm the waterproof rating of the thermometer (such as IP67, IP68) to ensure that it will not be damaged by water immersion during calibration.
If long-term immersion calibration is required, test the stability of the thermometer in liquid in advance.
2、 Calibration method
Method 1: Comparison method (commonly used)
Fixed temperature point calibration
Steps:
Immerse both the standard thermometer and the calibrated thermometer into a constant temperature medium (such as ice water mixture, boiling water, oil bath, or specialized calibration solution).
Wait for the temperature to stabilize (usually taking 5-10 minutes) and record the readings of both.
Repeat at least 3 times and take the average.
Temperature point selection:
Low temperature point: 0 ℃ (ice water mixture)
High temperature point: 100 ℃ (boiling water, air pressure correction needs to be considered) or choose other points according to the usage range (such as 40 ℃, 60 ℃).
Middle point: covering the commonly used measurement range.
Multi point calibration (high-precision requirement)
Repeat the above steps at multiple temperature points (such as -10 ℃, 20 ℃, 50 ℃, 90 ℃) and draw the error curve.
Method 2: Fixed point calibration (high-precision scene)
Applicable scenarios: laboratories or metrology institutions.
Steps:
Set a fixed temperature point using a standard temperature source (such as a constant temperature bath).
Immerse the calibrated thermometer and record the reading after it stabilizes.
Compare with the standard value and calculate the error.
3、 Error Calculation and Correction
calculation error
Error=calibrated thermometer reading - standard thermometer reading
Example: If the standard value is 25.0 ℃ and the calibrated value is 25.3 ℃, the error is+0.3 ℃.
Correction method
Hardware correction: Some thermometers support adjusting the offset through buttons (refer to the manual).
Software correction: Enter error values in the data recording system and automatically correct readings.
Marking error: If it cannot be corrected, the error range should be marked on the thermometer and manually compensated during use.
4、 Calibration cycle and records
calibration cycle
Frequent use: Calibrate every 3-6 months.
Key measurement scenario: Calibration before each use.
After long-term storage: Calibration is required before use.
Record keeping
Record the calibration date, environmental conditions, standard values, calibrated values, and errors.
Retain the calibration certificate (if completed by a third-party organization).
5、 Precautions
waterproof treatment
After calibration, wipe the thermometer dry with a clean cloth to avoid residual moisture affecting the sensor.
If the calibration solution is a corrosive medium (such as salt water), it needs to be cleaned and dried immediately.
Avoid mechanical impact
Prevent thermometers from colliding or falling during calibration, especially glass thermometers.
Sensor protection
Ensure that the sensor is fully immersed in the medium to avoid reading deviation caused by air entrapment.
Professional calibration
For scenarios with high precision requirements (such as medical and food processing), it is recommended to send them to a metrology institution for calibration.
6、 Common problem solving
Unstable reading: Check if the medium is uniform and if the thermometer is in contact with the container wall or bottom.
Excessive error: Confirm whether the standard thermometer is accurate or whether the thermometer is damaged (such as circuit failure caused by water ingress).
Unable to fix: Contact the manufacturer to replace the sensor or recalibrate.
By following the above steps, the measurement accuracy of the waterproof thermometer can be effectively ensured, meeting the needs of different scenarios.
