Calibration method for portable impact echo tester
Date: 2025-11-06Read: 0
Portable impact echo tester is a widely used device for detecting internal defects and stress states in concrete structures, rocks, and other building materials. It uses the shock echo method to detect internal defects in materials, such as cracks, voids, and poor density, by sending shock waves and analyzing the echo signals. In order to ensure the accuracy of test results, the calibration of portable impact echo testers is very important. The following are common calibration methods for portable impact echo testers.
1. Preparation for verification
Before starting the calibration, it is necessary to ensure the following:
Instrument inspection: Ensure that the appearance of the testing instrument is intact, and all functional buttons, display screens, connection ports, etc. of the instrument are working properly.
Calibration standard parts: It is necessary to use standard test blocks or standard test parts with known characteristics. Usually, the density, hardness, structure, etc. of these standard parts are known, and the echo signal characteristics of these standard parts can be used as a reference.
Environmental control: The testing environment should maintain stable temperature and humidity to avoid affecting the echo signal. The ideal ambient temperature is generally 20 ℃, with humidity maintained between 40% -60%.
2. Calibration method
2.1 Calibration of shock wave transmission and reception channels
Launch system calibration: Measure with standard test pieces to see if the shock wave launch system produces the expected waveform. The stability and accuracy of the instrument's transmission system can be verified by directly measuring the waveform of the shock wave.
Calibration of receiving system: Check whether the receiving system of the instrument can accurately receive the echo signal, ensuring that the amplitude, frequency, and propagation time of the echo signal are not distorted or biased.
2.2 Calibration of Signal Processing Unit
Amplitude calibration: Calibrate the amplitude response of the instrument through standard test pieces to ensure that the instrument can accurately measure the strength of the echo signal.
Time calibration: By measuring the propagation time of shock waves and the return time of echo signals, the instrument can accurately calculate the time difference of echoes, thereby determining the internal structural information of the material.
2.3 Sensor Calibration
Sensor position calibration: Confirm the contact quality between the sensor and the test surface to avoid errors. When performing calibration, standard materials and standard test pieces can be used to check whether the sensor response meets specifications.
Sensor sensitivity calibration: Adjust the sensitivity of the sensor based on the echo signal of the standard test piece to ensure stable operation throughout the entire testing process.
2.4 Instrument Performance Verification
Standard test piece verification: Conduct multiple tests using standard pieces (such as test blocks with known defects) to ensure that the strength, shape, and propagation time of the echo signal meet the standards. Standard test pieces typically include samples with different types of defects (such as cracks, voids, poor density, etc.), which can help confirm whether the instrument can effectively identify these defects.
Repeatability and repeatability verification: Test multiple samples repeatedly under the same conditions to verify the repeatability and stability of the instrument. If the test results are consistent, it indicates that the instrument performance is qualified.
3. Testing and Calibration Standards
Test condition requirements
Standard test block: According to standard regulations, use standard test blocks with known density and hardness, such as artificial defect blocks or void test blocks, for equipment calibration.
Measurement accuracy: The measurement error of the equipment is required to be within the allowable range of the standard, and usually the error should be controlled within ± 2%.
4. Precautions during the verification process
The influence of environmental temperature and humidity: Changes in temperature and humidity may affect the propagation speed and attenuation of echo signals. Therefore, during the calibration process, the temperature and humidity of the environment should be kept constant and recorded for reference.
Sensor contact quality: Ensure good contact between the sensor and the testing surface to avoid signal errors caused by poor contact.
Instrument stability testing: The equipment needs to maintain stable operation during the calibration process to avoid interference from factors such as low battery power or unstable power supply.
5. Result judgment
The verification results can be determined by comparing the deviation between actual measurement data and standard data. If the measurement error of the equipment exceeds the allowable range, it may be necessary to calibrate or maintain the instrument. Common sources of error include:
Sensor malfunction: may result in insufficient signal strength or signal loss.
Internal software issues with the instrument: may result in data processing errors or distortion of echo signals.
Testing environment issues: Excessive fluctuations in temperature and humidity may affect signal propagation.
6. Regular calibration and maintenance
To ensure the long-term accuracy and reliability of the impact echo tester, it is recommended to perform regular calibration and verification. Usually, testing instruments require comprehensive calibration and verification once a year or every two years. During long-term use, especially after being impacted or dropped, the instrument may experience a decrease in accuracy, so inspection and maintenance are necessary.
summary
The calibration method for portable impact echo testers mainly involves calibrating the transmission, reception, and signal processing systems, using standard test pieces to verify the accuracy and reliability of the instrument, and ensuring that it can correctly reflect the internal defects and structural characteristics of materials. Strictly following the standards and prescribed procedures during the verification process, maintaining good environmental control and instrument condition, is the key to ensuring the effectiveness of the verification results and instrument accuracy.
