The measurement results of TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) detector are influenced by various factors, covering multiple dimensions such as instrument performance, operating standards, environmental conditions, and post maintenance. The following will elaborate on the core influencing factors:
1、 Differences in Instrument Performance and Technical Principles
1. Sensor technology types: Sensors based on different principles are suitable for different scenarios: Electrochemical and semiconductor sensors are difficult to meet practical needs due to insufficient accuracy. In contrast, photoionization (PID) sensors have become a recommended choice due to their high sensitivity (ppb level), broad-spectrum response, and long lifespan (5 years).
2. Instrument stability and calibration mechanism: The instrument needs to undergo regular zero point automatic correction and multi-level target point calibration, otherwise errors may accumulate due to zero drift. In addition, the built-in switch signal can be linked to the exhaust equipment to respond in real-time to leakage events and reduce safety risks.
2、 Standardization of Sampling and Testing Processes
1. Selection and pretreatment of adsorption tubes: The performance of Tenax TA adsorption tubes directly affects sampling efficiency. Before use, it is necessary to calibrate the flow rate to 100mL/min using a soap film flowmeter and select adsorption tubes with matching resistance to reduce batch differences. The diameter of adsorbent particles should be controlled at around 0.2mm. If it is too large, it will cause organic matter to penetrate, while if it is too small, it will increase airflow resistance. In addition, the activation temperature of the adsorption tube should reach 300 ℃ and last for half an hour. It can only be used after cooling to room temperature to avoid interference from impurities.
2. Precise control of thermal desorption process: The temperature and time of thermal desorption need to be strictly optimized: too high a temperature may cause component decomposition, while too low a temperature may result in insufficient desorption; If the time is too long, errors may be introduced due to airtightness issues, while if it is too short, residues may affect subsequent analysis. It is recommended to use direct injection method instead of secondary operation method to reduce manual operation errors.
3、 Dynamic interference of environmental conditions
1. Temperature and humidity fluctuations: During laboratory or on-site sampling, drastic temperature changes can cause sample condensation or accelerated release, and high humidity may cause adsorbent deliquescence. Therefore, it is necessary to stabilize the environment at 15-30 ℃, humidity<65%, and eliminate the temperature difference before opening the standard sample.
2. Ventilation and Pollutant Distribution: Before sampling, the space should be ventilated for two days to ensure a balanced concentration of pollutants. In addition, building types (such as kindergartens belonging to Class I civil buildings) correspond to different TVOC limits (0.5mg/m ³), and when they exceed the limit, they need to be intervened by the fresh air system.
4、 Data analysis and post maintenance
1. Program optimization for chromatographic analysis: In gas chromatography analysis, the temperature setting of the column temperature box program (initially maintained at 50 ℃ for 10 minutes, then increased to 250 ℃ at 5 ℃/min) is crucial for component separation. The quantification of peak area needs to be based on the standard curve regression equation, and dual gas path data collection can improve accuracy.
2. Periodic maintenance and storage management: The detector needs to perform zeroing and calibration checks every 3 months, and the installation height should be adjusted according to the gas density during deployment (0.3-0.6m above the ground for heavier than air, and 0.5-2m above the release source for lighter). Outdoor installation should avoid rainwater erosion, install breathable waterproof covers, and use twisted pair shielded wires to transmit signals to resist electromagnetic interference.
The reliability of TVOC detector depends on the collaborative optimization of instrument selection, operating standards, environmental adaptation, and maintenance system. Only through refined control throughout the entire process can precise monitoring be achieved, effectively ensuring indoor air quality and human health.
