In the microscopic world, an instrument can capture the precise trajectory of nanoparticles in an electric field, and the Zeta potential value it reveals is becoming a gold standard for predicting colloidal stability. In fields such as colloid chemistry, nanomaterials, and biomedicine, the stability of dispersed systems directly determines the performance and lifespan of products. Zeta potential analyzer, as a precise characterization instrument, reveals whether colloidal systems are prone to aggregation or long-term stability by analyzing the motion behavior of particles in an electric field, providing crucial data support for scientific research and industrial applications.
The core working principle of Zeta potential analyzer is based on electrophoretic light scattering technology and laser Doppler velocimetry technology. When charged particles are suspended in a liquid, their surface attracts ions of opposite charges around them to form a "double layer". Zeta potential refers to the effective surface potential of colloidal particles on the sliding surface in solution. During measurement, the instrument applies an electric field to the sample cell, and charged particles move towards the opposite electrode under the action of the electric field (electrophoretic phenomenon). The instrument emits laser to irradiate moving particles, and according to the Doppler effect, the frequency of the scattered light from the moving particles will undergo a slight shift. By detecting the frequency shift of these scattered lights, the electrophoretic mobility of particles can be accurately calculated. Finally, the electrophoretic mobility is converted to Zeta potential values using the Henry equation. The entire measurement process only takes a few minutes, yet it can provide crucial information about the surface charge characteristics of particles.
Modern Zeta potential analyzers are composed of multiple precision components. Laser sources typically use high-power, high stability semiconductor lasers to provide the incident light source. The material of the sample pool is mostly quartz or disposable electrode cups, with a capacity as small as 130 μ L, meeting the needs of trace sample measurement. The detection system uses high-sensitivity APD (avalanche photodiode) and other photosensitive elements to capture scattered light signals. The temperature control system can maintain a measurement environment of 0-90 ℃, and some models also have temperature gradient function, which can analyze the denaturation and phase transfer temperature of the sample. The advanced instrument also integrates an automatic titration module, which can perform pH titration to determine the isoelectric point, as well as synchronous measurement of parameters such as conductivity and temperature. These components collectively ensure the accuracy and repeatability of measurements.
The error range is usually within ± 0.5mV, and it can detect potential changes at the millivolt level. Measurement speed is another major advantage, as a single measurement usually takes only a few minutes and supports batch filtering and real-time dynamic monitoring. The instrument also has a wide measurement range, capable of detecting particles ranging from 1nm to 10 μ m, covering a wide range of scales from nanomaterials to microparticles. Modern instruments also have the function of multi parameter combination, which can be combined with dynamic light scattering technology to synchronously measure Zeta potential and particle size distribution, comprehensively characterizing colloidal properties. This non-invasive measurement does not require labeling or separation of particles, maintains the original state of the sample, and is particularly suitable for biological sample research.
In the field of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, it is used to evaluate the stability of liposomes, protein preparations, and vaccines, and optimize drug delivery systems. By studying the surface charge of drug carriers, prescription design can be optimized to prolong drug efficacy. In material science, the instrument can be used to study the surface modification effect of nano powder and ceramic slurry, and control the dispersion stability of pigments. In the semiconductor industry, it helps to study the electrostatic interactions between wafer surfaces and particles in polishing solutions, optimizing chemical mechanical polishing processes. In the field of water treatment, the Zeta potential analyzer is used to guide the dosage of coagulants, and the optimal coagulation effect is achieved by regulating the Zeta potential. Food science uses it to analyze the stability of lotion and improve the taste and shelf life of products.
From laboratory research and development to industrial production, Zeta potential analyzers continue to provide critical data support for various industries through their precise and efficient measurement capabilities. It is not only a measuring instrument, but also a key to understanding the interactions in the microscopic world, providing quantitative stability criteria for colloid science.
