In the fields of nanomaterials, biomedicine, environmental science, coatings industry, and water treatment, the stability of colloidal systems directly determines the performance and lifespan of products. Whether it is liposomes in drug delivery, coagulation processes in wastewater treatment, or the dispersibility of ceramic slurries, there is a key physicochemical parameter hidden behind them - Zeta Potential. The core equipment used for precise measurement of this parameter is the ZETA potential analyzer. It is like a "surface charge decoder" that analyzes the motion behavior of particles in an electric field, revealing whether colloidal systems are prone to aggregation or long-term stability, providing crucial data support for scientific research and industrial applications.
The Zeta potential is not the charge of the particles themselves, but the effective surface potential of colloidal particles on the sliding plane in solution, measured in millivolts (mV). When particles are suspended in a liquid, their surface usually carries a charge (positive or negative), which attracts ions with opposite charges around them to form a double layer. Some of the counter ions are tightly adsorbed on the surface (Stern layer), while the other part diffuses and distributes in the outer layer. The Zeta potential, which is the interface potential between the tightly bound layer and the diffusion layer, is a key factor determining the electrostatic repulsion between particles.
The ZETA potential analyzer is mainly based on electrophoretic light scattering technology for measurement, and its core steps are as follows:
1. Sample preparation: Disperse the particles to be tested in an appropriate medium (usually water or buffer), ensuring a moderate concentration and no bubbles;
2. Apply electric field: Inject the sample into a dedicated measuring cell (such as a quartz cuvette or capillary cell), and apply a DC or AC electric field at both ends;
3. Observing particle motion: Charged particles move towards opposite electrodes under the action of an electric field, a phenomenon known as electrophoresis;
4. Laser Doppler velocimetry: The instrument emits a beam of laser to irradiate suspended particles, causing a frequency shift of scattered light due to particle motion (Doppler effect). The frequency shift is detected by interference technology to calculate the electrophoretic mobility of the particles;
5. Convert to Zeta potential: Use Henry's Equation and Smoluchowski or H ü ckel theoretical models to convert the mobility to Zeta potential values.
Core advantages: non-invasive, highly sensitive, multifunctional:
-Non destructive measurement: no need to separate or label particles, maintain the original state of the sample;
-High sensitivity: capable of detecting surface charge changes of nanoscale particles (1 nm-10 μ m);
-Fast and efficient: single measurement only takes a few minutes, suitable for batch screening;
-High degree of automation: supports pH automatic titration, temperature gradient scanning, real-time data fitting, and report generation;
-Multi parameter combination: Combining DLS technology to achieve synchronous analysis of particle size and Zeta potential, comprehensively characterizing colloidal properties.
ZETA potential analyzer plays a key role in multiple cutting-edge technological fields:
-Drug development: Evaluate the stability of liposomes, nanoparticles, and protein preparations, optimize prescription design, and prolong drug efficacy;
-Gene therapy: studying the charge matching between cationic lipids and DNA/RNA complexes to improve transfection efficiency;
-Water treatment: guide the dosage of flocculants and achieve the best coagulation effect by adjusting the Zeta potential;
-Coatings and inks: Ensure even dispersion of pigments, prevent sedimentation and clumping;
-Food science: analyze the stability of lotion (such as milk and condiments) to improve the taste and shelf life;
-Material science: study the surface modification effect of nano powder, ceramic slurry and carbon materials.
Precautions and Development Trends for Use
Although the technology is mature, attention should still be paid to:
-The sample should be fully dispersed to avoid agglomeration affecting the results;
-Select appropriate media and ion strength to simulate actual application environments;
-High concentration or strongly absorbing samples may interfere with the signal and require appropriate dilution.
The ZETA potential analyzer is not only a precision instrument in the laboratory, but also a key to understanding the interactions in the microscopic world. It provides a quantitative stability criterion for colloid science by capturing the "dance trajectory" of particles in an electric field, decoding the secret of their surface charge.
