Mastering the correct usage method of salt spray corrosion test chamber is the key to ensuring the scientificity and reproducibility of testing
Date: 2025-11-24Read: 0

The salt spray corrosion test chamber simulates the sodium chloride salt spray environment in marine or industrial atmospheres to accelerate the evaluation of the corrosion resistance of metal materials, coatings, electroplating layers, and electronic components. It is widely used in industries such as automotive, aviation, electronics, and hardware. The test results directly affect the product's lifespan and quality certification (such as ISO9227, ASTMB117). However, if the operation is not standardized, it may not only render the experiment invalid, but also damage the equipment or cause safety hazards. Mastering the correct usage method of salt spray corrosion test chamber is the key to ensuring the scientificity and reproducibility of testing.

1、 Preparation before the experiment: standardize the liquid preparation and clean the sample
Saltwater preparation: Use analytical pure NaCl and deionized water (resistivity ≥ 1M Ω· cm), strictly control the concentration at 5.0% ± 0.1% (mass ratio), adjust the pH value to 6.5-7.2 with dilute hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide (at 35 ℃);
Sample processing: The surface of the sample should be free of oil stains, fingerprints, or oxide scales. The cutting edges should be coated with anti-corrosion wax to avoid corrosion interference from non test surfaces;
Placement requirements: The sample should be placed on the sample rack at an angle of 15 ° -30 °, ensuring that the salt spray settles freely, does not obstruct each other, and does not touch the box.
2、 Parameter setting and operation control
Temperature setting: Neutral salt spray (NSS) test with a constant temperature of 35 ± 2 ℃, copper accelerated acetate salt spray (CASS) with a temperature of 50 ± 1 ℃;
Spray pressure: adjust the air source pressure to 0.07 – 0.17MPa to ensure that the nozzle produces continuous and fine mist particles (collection rate 1.0 – 2.0mL/80cm? ·h);
Prohibited from opening the box midway: Frequent opening of doors during the test period can cause sudden changes in temperature and humidity, affecting the corrosion process. Only brief inspections are allowed at designated time points.
3、 Water quality and consumables management
Strictly prohibit the use of tap water: Calcium and magnesium ions can clog the nozzle and form white deposits, affecting the uniformity of salt spray;
Regularly replace saltwater: If the continuous test exceeds 72 hours, a new solution should be replaced to prevent pH drift or impurity accumulation;
Nozzle maintenance: Check the nozzle for blockage every week, using ultrasonic cleaning or a 0.4mm fine needle to clear it. Do not scratch with hard objects.
4、 Post experimental processing and recording
After the test, turn off the heating and spray, and take out the sample after the box is cooled to room temperature. Rinse the surface with flowing clean water and dry it with compressed air. According to the standard rating (such as GB/T6461), record the corrosion area, bubble level, or time of occurrence of red rust, and attach photos for archiving.
