How much do you know about the main types and functional characteristics of aviation engine endoscopes
Date: 2025-11-04Read: 3
Aircraft engine endoscopes (also known as borescope) use optical or electronic imaging technology to achieve non-destructive visualization testing of the internal structure of the engine. By inserting a probe into the interior of an aircraft engine and using an optical or electronic imaging system to transmit images of the engine's interior to an external display screen, inspectors can visually observe the condition of internal components such as blades, combustion chambers, turbines, etc., thereby discovering defects or abnormalities such as cracks, wear, corrosion, carbon deposits, etc.
Mainly used for regular maintenance and inspection of aircraft engines, troubleshooting, and inspection before major repairs. It can detect whether the blades are damaged by fractures, cracks, dents, etc., whether there is melting or coating peeling in the combustion chamber, and whether there is excessive residue inside the engine, helping the inspectors to discover problems in a timely manner and avoid engine failures that may cause safety accidents.
Features
Non destructive testing: No need to disassemble the engine, the probe can be inserted into the engine through the probe hole for testing, without causing damage to the engine.
High definition imaging: Equipped with a high-resolution camera and a good optical system, it can provide clear and delicate images, making it easy for inspectors to detect small defects.
Flexible detection: The probe has good flexibility and bendability, with a rotation angle of up to 360 degrees, making it easy to enter narrow and complex parts inside the engine.
Measurement function: It can measure the size, length, depth, etc. of defects, providing accurate data for maintenance decisions. Some endoscopes also have 3D modeling capabilities, which help to select measurement points more accurately.
Main types
Optical endoscope: using optical lenses and optical fibers to transmit images, it has the advantages of high resolution and clear images, but the probe diameter is large and the bending angle is limited.
Electronic endoscope: Using charge coupled devices (CCD) or complementary metal oxide semiconductor sensors for imaging, the image quality is high, the probe diameter can be made smaller, and the bending flexibility is good, which can adapt to more complex detection environments.
High temperature endoscope: The probe and sensor are made of special alloy materials that are resistant to high temperatures and corrosion, and are equipped with insulation and cooling systems inside, which can work stably in high temperature environments of thousands of degrees Celsius.
