Discussion on the Design and Manufacturing Process of High Temperature Resistant Heating Plates in Instrument Encyclopedia
Date: 2025-12-19Read: 1
High temperature resistant heating plateIt is a key component in modern industries such as semiconductors, photovoltaics, aerospace, new material synthesis, food processing, etc. Its design and manufacturing process are directly related to the performance, reliability, and lifespan of the equipment.
Below we will proceed fromdesign considerationsandmanufacturing processConduct in-depth discussions on two major aspects.
1、 Design considerations for high-temperature resistant heating plates
Design is the soul of manufacturing, and a good design must comprehensively consider multiple disciplines such as heat, electricity, mechanics, materials, and control.
1. Core performance indicators and design inputs
At the beginning of the design, the following key parameters must be clearly defined:
  Maximum operating temperatureThis is the core indicator that determines the upper limit of material selection (such as 400 ° C, 800 ° C, 1200 ° C, 1600 ° C+).
Target heating area and temperature uniformityWhat is the area that needs to be heated? What is the required surface temperature difference to be controlled within? (For example: ± 1 ° C, ± 5 ° C).
Power density and total powerThe power per unit area (W/cm ²) and total power (kW) are related to heating speed and heating element selection.
Surface material and roughness requirementsDoes the contact surface need mirror polishing to reduce particle contamination? Or just need to be corrosion-resistant?
Installation and interface methodHow to fix it? How to lead out the power cord? Is it necessary to integrate temperature sensors (thermocouples, RTDs)?
Usage environmentAtmosphere (air, vacuum, inert gas, hydrogen), pressure, presence of corrosive gases or liquid splashes.
2. Selection of heating element materials
The heating element is the "heart" of the heating plate, and its selection directly determines the temperature resistance limit and performance.
Resistance wire (below~500 ° C)Such as nickel chromium wire, iron chromium aluminum wire. Low cost, mature process, but limited temperature resistance and easy oxidation. Suitable for low-temperature areas.
Silicon carbon rod (~1500 ° C)Silicon carbide material has good high-temperature oxidation resistance, but it is brittle and the resistance changes greatly with temperature, requiring a matching voltage regulator.
Silicon molybdenum rod (~1800 ° C)Molybdenum disilicide material, which can be used for a long time in an oxidizing atmosphere up to 1700 ° C, is currently one of the medium to high temperature equipment. It should be noted that it has low-temperature brittleness in the range of 400-700 ° C, and heating/cooling needs to cross this range.
Molybdenum/tungsten/tantalum and other metal heating elements (above 2000 ° C)Mainly used for ultra-high vacuum or protective atmosphere environments. They have a high melting point, but are prone to oxidation and must be used in an inert atmosphere or vacuum.
Non metallic heating elementSuch as graphite heating element (which can reach over 2500 ° C in vacuum or inert atmosphere), commonly used in ultra-high temperature fields such as single crystal furnaces and CVD equipment.
3. Selection of substrate (carrier) materials
The substrate is responsible for carrying the heating element and evenly distributing heat across the entire surface.
  metal substrate:
Aluminum alloy (<300 ° C)Good thermal conductivity, light weight, low cost, but poor temperature resistance.
Stainless steel (<600 ° C)High mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and wide application.
Aluminum alloy (special formula,<400 ° C)Temperature resistance can be improved through special processes.
  ceramic substrate:
Aluminum oxide (Al ₂ O3) ceramics (~1600 ° C)Commonly used high-temperature ceramics have good insulation, decent mechanical strength, and superior thermal conductivity compared to other oxide ceramics.
Aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramics (~2000 ° C)The thermal conductivity is much higher than that of alumina (about 7-10 times higher), making it an ideal choice for heat dissipation applications, but the cost is high.
Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics (~1600 ° C)Combining high thermal conductivity and high mechanical strength, with good wear resistance, but difficult to process and high cost.
Composite substrateFor example, metal ceramic composite panels aim to combine the processing convenience of metals with the high temperature resistance of ceramics, but interface bonding technology is a difficult point.
4. Heating element layout and circuit design
Layout principlesIn order to achieve good temperature uniformity, the arrangement of heating elements is usually not simply parallel, but adoptsPartition heatingorSpiral windingUsing various methods and combined with simulation software to simulate the thermal field, optimize the current path and density distribution.
circuit designIt is necessary to consider the combination of series and parallel to match the power supply voltage (220V, 380V, etc.), and reserve sufficient wiring space and insulation distance. For high-precision applications, it will be designed as multi loop independent control, combined with PID temperature control system to achieve ultra precision temperature equalization.
5. Insulation and sealing design
interlayer insulationWhen insulation is required between the heating element and the substrate, or between conductors with different potentials, mica sheets, ceramic beads, glass glazes, or special ceramic coatings are used.
Lead insulationThe leads under high temperature must use insulation materials that are resistant to high temperature, such as ceramic tubes, quartz tubes, or fiberglass braided sleeves.
vacuum sealingHeating plates used in vacuum environments must have reliable vacuum sealing at their leads and joints (such as using metal ceramic sealing, glass sealing, or special sealing rings).
2、 Exploration into the Manufacturing Process of High Temperature Resistant Heating Plates
Manufacturing process is the bridge that transforms design blueprints into reliable products, and every step is crucial.
1. Substrate pretreatment
metal substrateCutting, cleaning (to remove oil stains and oxide layers), surface roughening (to increase adhesion), spraying and laying the bottom layer (such as nickel layer).
ceramic substrateCutting (diamond saw), grinding, cleaning, silk screen printing or pasting high-temperature solder layer (if welding with heating element is required).
2. Manufacturing and forming of heating element
Resistance wire/rodAccording to the drawing, it can be wound into shape or cut into sections.
Silicon carbon/silicon molybdenum rodUsually customized by professional manufacturers, cut and installed according to size.
Thin film printingFor low-temperature or planar heaters, silver paste, platinum paste, or special alloy paste is commonly printed on a substrate using screen printing technology, and then dried and sintered to form a conductive heating film. This is the mainstream process for flat heaters.
3. Bonding process between heating element and substrate (core process)
This is a crucial step in determining the lifespan and performance of the heating plate.
Mechanical fixation methodFix the heating element onto the substrate using ceramic beads, mica clips, or ceramic screws.advantageSimple and reliable, without introducing new interfaces.shortcomingHigh thermal resistance, poor temperature uniformity, not suitable for high-precision applications.
Adhesive method: UseHigh temperature inorganic adhesive(such as silicate, phosphate gel) orsilicone rubberStick the heating element onto the substrate. Inorganic adhesives have high temperature resistance (>1000 ° C), but are brittle after curing; Organic silicone has low temperature resistance (<300 ° C), but good flexibility.AttentionAdhesive aging is the main failure mode.
Welding methodWeld the heating element (such as certain alloy wires) and the plating layer (such as nickel layer) on the substrate together using high-temperature solder (such as silver solder, copper solder).advantageHigh bonding strength, good thermal conductivity, and high reliability.shortcomingNarrow process window, strict requirements for cleanliness and temperature curve.
Sintering methodMainly used for thin film heating elements. The printed paste is sintered at high temperature in a tunnel kiln or box furnace to melt the conductive phase and form a strong chemical bond with the substrate.advantageStrong adhesion and stable conductive/thermal pathways.
4. Circuit connection and lead out processing
Connect the heating elements of each section through high-temperature wires and busbars.
The lead wire is led out through an insulated ceramic tube or sealed joint, and sealed (such as using ceramic powder, quartz sand, or epoxy resin, but only inorganic materials can be used at the high temperature end) to protect the connection point.
5. Surface treatment and integration
metal surfaceCan be treated with sandblasting, passivation, and anti-corrosion coating.
Ceramic surfacePolishing and metallization (such as nickel plating and gold plating) can be performed to meet specific requirements (such as welding and reducing contact resistance).
Sensor integrationPre embed or paste thermocouples or RTDs in predetermined positions and calibrate them.
6. Testing and Aging
Electrical testingMeasure cold resistance and insulation resistance.
Functional TestingPower on and heat up, test the heating rate, maximum temperature, and power consumption.
Temperature uniformity testUse a thermometer (such as an infrared thermal imager or multi-point thermocouple) to scan the surface and verify if it meets the design requirements.
aging testConduct long-term trial operation under rated conditions to expose early failure issues and ensure long-term reliability.
Summary and Challenge
