The key role of differential pressure transmitter in liquid level control of distillation tower

Differential pressure transmitters play a crucial role in the liquid level control of distillation towers. They provide critical feedback signals to the control system by accurately measuring the pressure difference corresponding to the liquid level height, ensuring stable and efficient operation of the distillation process.
1、 The core principle of liquid level measurement
The liquid level height inside the distillation tower is directly proportional to the static pressure of the medium. The differential pressure transmitter indirectly calculates the liquid level height by measuring the pressure difference between the bottom and top of the tower (or reference point). For example, when the medium density inside the tower is ρ and the liquid level height is h, the pressure difference Δ P=ρ gh (g is the gravitational acceleration), and the transmitter converts Δ P into a standard electrical signal (such as 4-20mA), which is transmitted to the control system for real-time monitoring.
2、 Key role analysis
Precise control of liquid level range
The distillation tower needs to maintain a specific liquid level to optimize separation efficiency: excessively high liquid levels may result in liquid carryover at the top of the tower, reducing purity; If the liquid level is too low, it will cause the bottom reboiler to dry burn and damage the equipment. The differential pressure transmitter continuously monitors changes in liquid level and, in conjunction with a PID controller, automatically adjusts the opening of the feed valve or discharge valve to stabilize the liquid level within a range of ± 1% of the set value, ensuring precise and controllable process parameters.
Ensure safe production
The medium inside the distillation tower is mostly flammable, explosive, or toxic substances (such as ethanol, benzene, etc.), and abnormal liquid levels may cause accidents such as leaks and explosions. The differential pressure transmitter has high reliability (such as SIL2 certification) and fast response capability (response time<100ms). It can immediately trigger interlock protection when the liquid level exceeds the safety threshold, turn off the heating steam or start emergency drainage to avoid the expansion of accidents.
Adapt to complex working conditions
The distillation process is accompanied by temperature, pressure fluctuations, and changes in medium density, making traditional level gauges susceptible to interference. The differential pressure transmitter automatically corrects measurement errors through built-in temperature compensation and density correction algorithms, ensuring a measurement accuracy of ± 0.1% over a wide operating range of -20 ℃ to 350 ℃ and 0 to 10MPa, meeting the stringent requirements of the chemical industry.
3、 Typical application cases
In petroleum refining and distillation towers, differential pressure transmitters, float level gauges, and radar level gauges form a redundant measurement system that improves reliability through a two out of three logic. When the liquid level exceeds 85%, the system automatically reduces the feed flow rate and increases the top extraction volume; If the liquid level continues to rise to 90%, an emergency shutdown procedure will be triggered to effectively avoid the risk of tray flushing or tower overpressure.
