The purpose and principle of particle counter
Date: 2015-05-04Read: 0

A particle counter is an instrument used to test the particle size and distribution of airborne dust particles. It has evolved from microscopes and has gone through processes such as microscopes, settling tubes, settling instruments, centrifugal settling instruments, particle counters, laser air particle counters, condensation nucleus particle counters, and multi-channel multifunctional particle counters.

At present, it is widely used in drug testing institutes, blood centers, epidemic prevention stations, disease control centers, quality supervision institutes and other institutions in various provinces and cities, as well as in the electronics industry, pharmaceutical workshops, semiconductor, optical or precision machining, plastics, painting, hospitals, environmental protection, inspection institutes and other production enterprises and scientific research departments.

The working principle of particle counter:

A particle counter is an instrument that uses the principle of light scattering to count dust particles. Light scattering is related to factors such as particle size, wavelength of light waves, refractive index of particles, and absorption characteristics of particles towards light. However, in terms of scattered light intensity and particle size, there is a basic rule that the intensity of scattered light from particles increases with the increase of their surface area. In this way, a certain flow rate of dusty gas emits scattered light through a beam of strong light, which is then projected onto a photomultiplier tube through a condenser lens. The light pulse is converted into an electrical pulse, and the number of particles is calculated from the number of pulses.

Calculate the particle diameter based on the functional relationship between the intensity of scattered light and the particle size. In this way, by measuring the intensity of scattered light, the size of particles can be inferred, which is the basic principle of light scattering particle counters.
