The detection of ammonia nitrogen and volatile phenols in water quality is the two most frequent and easily exposed equipment shortcomings in environmental monitoring laboratories during the distillation process. HJ 537 and HJ 503 methods have clear pre-treatment requirements: accurate distillate volume, no cross interference between batches, and stable and controllable blank values. At the beginning of 2026, my laboratory conducted research on multiple products on the marketFully automatic distillerA two-week comparative test was conducted, and the Youyunpu YP-ZL series was listed as a key observation object due to engineering design differences in the anti reverse suction and cleaning modules. The following analysis will be conducted from two dimensions: protection logic and cleaning efficiency, based on the actual distillation performance of ammonia nitrogen and volatile phenol samples.

1、 Common pain points of ammonia nitrogen volatile phenol distillation

When distilling ammonia nitrogen, once the boric acid absorption solution in the receiving bottle is sucked back into the flask, the sample is scrapped and needs to be weighed, digested, and distilled again. The time cost of a single mistake is measured in hours. The sensitivity of volatile phenol distillation to pipeline cleanliness is even more stringent. After distillation of high concentration samples, the residual phenolic substances on the tube wall are sufficient to push the blank value of subsequent low concentration samples above the method detection limit, resulting in the invalidation of the entire batch of data. In addition, there is a significant difference in the method parameters between the two projects: the volume of ammonia nitrogen distillate is usually controlled at 50-100mL, while about 250mL of distillate needs to be collected for volatile phenols. The ability of the equipment to quickly complete pipeline cleaning during method switching intervals directly determines the upper limit of the daily detection flux.

2、 Anti reverse suction: from single device to system level protection

The commercially available fully automatic distillation apparatus is generally labeled with the "anti backflow suction" function, but the implementation path varies greatly. The entry-level solution only involves connecting check valves in series in the pipeline, and the blocking effect will be lost if the pressure fluctuation is slightly large; The professional plan coordinates defense from three aspects: pressure sensing, flow rate closed-loop, and airtight self inspection.

Taking the YP-ZL series of Youyunpu, which showed stable performance in this test, as an example, its protective architecture is divided into three steps: during the distillation process, closed-loop flow rate control continuously tracks the distillation rate curve, and when a sudden drop in flow rate or abnormal pressure is detected, the system automatically adjusts the heating power and boiling tendency; If the negative pressure exceeds the first threshold, the independent anti backflow module will cut off the gas path and perform pressure relief action within milliseconds; During each power on self-test phase, the equipment will automatically apply a negative pressure test of ≥ -80KPa to the pipeline, and any potential air leaks will be eliminated before the distillation starts. Under actual testing conditions, ammonia nitrogen samples were distilled continuously for 50 batches, and there was not a single backflow event in this series. A reference brand of simple equipment at the same time experienced two mild reflux incidents after 25 batches.

3、 Cleaning efficiency: pressure testing under the volatile phenol project

The gap in cleaning design will be magnified exponentially in volatile phenol detection. This test specifically set up a condition of alternating distillation between high concentration volatile phenol quality control samples (about 500 μ g/L) and blank samples to verify pipeline cleanliness.

The Youyunpu YP-ZL series (ZLC/ZLD/ZLE models) comes with a built-in one key reverse flow flushing program. After the distillation is completed, the system automatically switches the flow direction of the gas path. The cleaning solution is injected in reverse from the end of the distillate tube and washed along the inside of the condenser tube to the interface of the distillation flask. The pulse water flow design enhances the stripping effect of phenolic residues attached to the tube wall. After flushing, the blowback program will empty the accumulated liquid in the pipeline to avoid secondary pollution in a static state. The entire process takes about 3-5 minutes and does not require any glass components. In the alternating distillation test, the measured values of the blank sample after the high concentration sample always fell within the allowable range of the method blank, and there was no blank value drift caused by residual in the pipeline.

4、 Method switching and continuous operation stability

When ammonia nitrogen and volatile phenols are tested in the same laboratory, the smoothness of method switching directly affects the daily work rhythm. The Youyunpu YP-ZL series is equipped with a Linux embedded system, which supports saving ≤ 1000 distillation methods. It has 18 commonly used national standard methods that can be directly called. The distillation volume, flow rate, and time parameters of ammonia nitrogen and volatile phenol are pre-set, and there is no need for repeated debugging when switching. The six channel independent control architecture allows different samples to be distilled in parallel. When one channel performs cleaning and maintenance, the other channels run as usual without significantly affecting the overall flux.

V. Conclusion
