What aspects should be considered when choosing a hydrogen generator
Date: 2025-09-15Read: 2
As an important gas supply equipment in laboratories and industrial fields, the selection of hydrogen generators directly affects experimental efficiency, data accuracy, and operational safety. The following outlines the key purchasing points from four aspects: core parameters, safety performance, operational convenience, and overall cost.
1、 Matching core parameters with actual needs
1. Gas production and pressure range
The rated output should be selected based on the instantaneous maximum gas consumption of downstream equipment (such as gas chromatography FID detector about 30-50mL/min), and a 20% margin should be reserved to cope with multi device parallel scenarios. The output pressure should cover the pressure requirements of the target instrument, with a typical value adjustable from 0-0.4MPa and the ability to stabilize the pressure with an accuracy within ± 0.01MPa.
2. Purity level of hydrogen gas
Determine purity standards based on application scenarios: 99.9% industrial grade can be selected for ordinary organic synthesis, and high-purity hydrogen with a purity of ≥ 99.999% is required for precision instruments (such as GC-MS). Pay attention to the configuration of the built-in purification system. Models using palladium alloy membrane separation technology can effectively remove impurities such as oxygen and water vapor.
3. Electrolysis efficiency and energy consumption
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis cells have a higher energy efficiency ratio compared to traditional alkaline electrolysis, and the unit hydrogen production power consumption can be controlled within 4.5-5.5 kWh/Nm ³. Devices equipped with intelligent power regulation modules can automatically adjust energy consumption based on gas fluctuations, resulting in significant energy-saving effects.
2、 Construction of Security Protection System
1. Leak prevention monitoring mechanism
The preferred dual leakage protection system is equipped with sound and light alarms and automatic power cut-off. Some models are integrated with laser methane detectors, which can detect trace leaks at the ppm level.
2. Electrical safety certification
It must pass international certifications such as CE and UL, and the internal circuit adopts explosion-proof design with a grounding resistance of ≤ 0.1 Ω. Models with emergency stop button and fault self diagnosis function can quickly respond to abnormal conditions.
3. Physical protective structure
The protection level of the metal shell should reach IP54 or above, and the electrolytic cell compartment should be equipped with a pressure relief valve to prevent overpressure explosion. If the hydrogen storage tank is built-in, it must comply with the requirements of the Safety Technical Supervision Regulations for Fixed Pressure Vessels.
3、 Intelligent operation experience
1. Human computer interaction interface
The combination of touch screen and mobile APP remote monitoring has become a mainstream configuration, displaying real-time parameters such as pressure, flow rate, and cumulative gas production. Devices that support exporting historical data are easy to trace and analyze.
2. Automatic water replenishment and drainage
External transparent water tank combined with liquid level sensor to achieve water shortage warning and automatic replenishment. The automatic waste discharge function can regularly clean the alkaline solution generated by electrolysis, extending the service life of the equipment.
3. Consumables replacement tips
The electrolytic electrode life counter, filter replacement reminder and other functions help users develop preventive maintenance plans to avoid sudden failures.
4、 Full lifecycle cost considerations
1. Initial investment comparison
Although imported brands have a higher unit price, they have more advantages in terms of continuous operation time (MTBF>8000 hours) and electrolysis efficiency. Domestic equipment has outstanding cost-effectiveness and is suitable for small and medium-sized laboratories with limited budgets.
2. Cost accounting for operation and maintenance
Focus on the replacement cycle of electrolytic electrodes (high-quality titanium coated ruthenium electrodes can last for over 8000 hours), the annual frequency of filter replacement, and electricity expenses. Modular design devices can replace damaged parts separately, reducing maintenance costs.
3. After sales service network
Choose brands with authorized service centers in China to ensure timely supply of spare parts. Enterprises providing annual inspection services can detect potential hazards in advance and ensure the continuous and stable operation of equipment.
Choosing a hydrogen generator requires establishing a four-dimensional evaluation model of "demand performance safety cost", which should not only meet current experimental needs but also consider future scalability and long-term economic viability. It is recommended to request a test data report from the supplier and conduct a 72 hour continuous machine test to ensure the reliability of the equipment under actual operating conditions.
