Lithium ion batteries, as the current mainstream secondary battery technology, are widely used in fields such as consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. One of its core components, the polyolefin separator, not only serves to isolate the positive and negative electrodes to prevent short circuits, but also directly affects the ion transport performance, thermal stability, and cycle life of the battery. Among them, the permeability (also known as gas permeability) of the separator is an important indicator to measure its pore structure and gas permeability, which directly affects the infiltration efficiency and ion migration rate of the electrolyte inside the battery. Therefore, scientifically and standardly testing the breathability of polyolefin separators is of great significance for ensuring battery performance and safety.
China has released and implemented the national standard GB/T36363-2018 Polyolefin Separators for Lithium ion Batteries, which specifies the testing methods and technical requirements for air permeability. This article will systematically explain the operation process, equipment requirements, and technical points of polyolefin membrane permeability testing based on this standard.
Test method for air permeability in GB/T36363-2018 standard
According to section 6.5 "Breathability" of GB/T36363-2018, the testing process is as follows: Sample preparation:
Cut 3 samples every 150mm along the longitudinal direction on the diaphragm roll;
If the diaphragm width is greater than 100mm, the sample size is 100mm × 100mm;
If the diaphragm width is less than 100mm, the sample size is 100mm x actual width.
Recommended testing instrument: PAPT-B02 diaphragm permeability tester

Operation
1. Place the sample flat in the testing head, ensuring no wrinkles or damage;
2. Start the device, set the pressure to 1.21KPa, set the flow rate to 100ml, and automatically complete the gas permeation process;
3. Click on "Test" to independently test the sample and record the results;
4. The final air permeability is taken as the arithmetic mean of three test results.
