Olefins are one of the most important raw materials in social production activities. They can form various polymer materials with different characteristics through polymerization reactions, and can then be processed into plastic appliances, pipes, synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber, etc. Common olefins such as ethylene and propylene are mainly derived from energy and chemical production. The production process routes for olefins include both petroleum catalytic cracking and coal gasification processes. The composition is usually complex, containing not only a large amount of alkanes and olefins, but also trace impurities such as sulfides and oxygen-containing compounds.These impurities not only easily cause catalyst poisoning, but also affect the grade and quality of polymer grade olefins. With the increasing demand for high-quality olefins in society, the need for olefin detection methods has become more urgent.

Based on these industry conditions, Sinopec (Shanghai) Petrochemical Research Institute held a "National and Industry Standard Promotion Conference for Light Olefins", and Restek was invited to attend and participate in the revision of the new gas chromatography standard for the determination of trace sulfides in industrial ethylene and propylene. In this meeting, experts from Sinopec (Shanghai) Petrochemical Research Institute provided explanations and clarifications on the new standards. This National and Industry Standard Promotion Meeting for Light OlefinsHosted by the Petrochemical Branch of the National Chemical Standardization Technical Committee and undertaken by Sinopec (Shanghai) Petrochemical Research Institute, we have promoted and trained four new national standards for ethylene and propylene, as well as four new industry standards for light olefins.The 8 standards involved are under the technical jurisdiction of the Petrochemical Standardization Committee, of which 6 standards have been officially published. Restek participated in the revision of "SH/T 1769-20XX Determination of Trace Sulfides in Ethylene and Propylene for Industrial Use by Gas Chromatography", which is one of the two standards to be officially published.

The new standard "SH/T 1769-20XX Determination of Trace Sulfides in Ethylene and Propylene for Industrial Use by Gas Chromatography" recommends three sets of chromatographic columns and typical operating conditions: condition 1 is applicable to the analysis of sulfides in ethylene; Condition 2 applies to the analysis of carbonyl sulfide in propylene;The chromatographic column scheme provided by Restek is shown in condition 3, and this method is applicable for the analysis of sulfides in both ethylene and propylene.

Sulfides are highly active compounds that adsorb onto surfaces of non passivated materials. Therefore, when analyzing such compounds, in addition to selecting chromatography columns with high inertness and resolution, special attention should be paid to the inertness of instrument accessories and sample flow paths. It is recommended to use inert sampling valves, liners, and transmission pipelines to reduce the adsorption of sulfides and improve the sensitivity of trace sulfide analysis.
