Analyzing the usage and operation skills of the drop hammer impact testing machine
Date: 2025-08-13Read: 20

The drop hammer impact testing machine is an important equipment in material mechanics performance testing, mainly used to determine the impact resistance of plastics, glass, metals and other materials under high-speed impact loads. It is widely used in aerospace, automotive manufacturing, building materials and other fields. Mastering its correct usage and operation skills can not only ensure the accuracy of test results, but also effectively extend the service life of equipment and avoid safety accidents.

Before using the hammer impact testing machine, sufficient preparation work should be done. Firstly, check the overall condition of the equipment to ensure that the rack is stable and not loose, the hammer lifting system runs smoothly, and the buffering device is intact. Secondly, based on the characteristics and standard requirements of the testing material, select the appropriate hammer weight and impact height. The hammer weight usually has different specifications such as 5kg, 10kg, 20kg, etc., and the impact height
The adjustment device of the device can be precisely set. At the same time, the sample needs to be pre treated to remove surface burrs and impurities, ensuring that the sample size meets the testing standards. For materials such as plastics that are easily affected by the environment, they need to be placed in a specified temperature and humidity environment for a certain period of time before testing.
When conducting formal operations, strict procedures must be followed. The first step is to install the sample, place the processed sample steadily on the test bench, fix it firmly with fixtures, and avoid displacement or detachment of the sample during the testing process. The second step is to adjust the position of the hammer, activate the lifting system to raise the hammer to the set height, and pay attention to whether the hammer is in a vertical state to ensure that the impact point coincides with the force center of the specimen. The third step is to start the test. After pressing the impact button, the hammer falls freely under the action of gravity to impact the sample. At the same time, the sensor of the equipment will record the force value, displacement and other data during the impact process. After the test is completed, wait for the hammer to stabilize before resetting it, then remove the sample and observe the damage of the sample, such as whether there are cracks, fractures, etc., and analyze it based on the recorded data.
Mastering some practical skills during the operation can effectively improve the testing effect. For example, when installing the sample, a soft gasket can be placed at the contact area between the fixture and the sample to prevent the sample from being pinched, while ensuring uniform clamping force and avoiding the impact of uneven force on the test results. For brittle materials, markings can be made on the surface of the specimen before testing to facilitate clear observation of the failure trajectory after impact. In addition, it is necessary to regularly lubricate and maintain key components of the equipment, such as lifting screws, guide columns, etc., to ensure their flexible operation and reduce mechanical wear.
It should be noted that the drop hammer impact testing machine belongs to high-speed impact equipment, and safety regulations must be strictly followed during operation. Operators should wear protective goggles, helmets, and other protective equipment. During the testing process, they should not approach the impact area to avoid accidental detachment of the hammer and injury. At the same time, if there are abnormal sounds, vibrations, or other situations during the operation of the equipment, it should be stopped immediately for inspection and troubleshooting before continuing to use.
The correct use of the drop hammer impact testing machine and mastery of relevant operating techniques are key to ensuring the accuracy of test data and the safe operation of equipment. Operators should be familiar with the structural principles and operating procedures of the equipment, pay attention to daily maintenance, strictly comply with safety regulations, in order to better utilize the performance of the equipment and provide reliable basis for material performance research and product quality testing.
