Beyond the critical point: a panoramic view of the principles and applications of supercritical reaction technology
Date: 2025-12-17Read: 0
Supercritical reaction technology opens up a new path for chemical reactions by pushing substances above the critical point and utilizing the unique properties of supercritical fluids. When the temperature and pressure of a fluid exceed the critical values simultaneously, its physical state undergoes a qualitative change: it is neither a gas nor a liquid, but combines the high diffusivity of a gas with the high solubility of a liquid, and parameters such as density and viscosity can be precisely controlled through pressure and temperature. This "adjustable medium" characteristic significantly enhances the activity of reactant molecules in a supercritical environment, increases mass transfer efficiency by several times, and allows the reaction rate constant to achieve order of magnitude transitions with small changes in pressure. At the same time, product separation can be achieved in one step by adjusting environmental parameters, in the traditional reaction separation mode.
Its core advantages lie in efficiency and greenness: when using supercritical water oxidation technology to treat organic pollutants, the reaction residence time is reduced from several hours in traditional methods to seconds, and a degradation rate of over 99% can be achieved without the need for catalysts; After replacing organic solvents with supercritical carbon dioxide, volatile organic compound emissions approach zero, and the solvent recovery rate exceeds 95%, forming a closed-loop system. In addition, the integrated design of reaction separation reduces energy consumption by more than 30%, which meets the needs of industrial low-carbon transformation.
Application scenarios cover multiple fields: In the field of environmental protection, supercritical technology can efficiently decompose stubborn pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and pesticide residues; In the field of chemical engineering, when supercritical fluids are used for polymerization reactions, the molecular weight distribution of the products is narrower and the performance is better; In the field of energy, supercritical gasification technology converts biomass into hydrogen energy, with a 40% increase in energy conversion efficiency compared to traditional methods; In materials science, the thermal conductivity of aerogels prepared by supercritical drying is as low as 0.01W/(m · K), becoming aerospace thermal insulation materials.
This technology is driving industrial production towards the goal of "atomic economy", and its modular design and intelligent pressure control system (with an accuracy of ± 0.1MPa) have further expanded its application boundaries, becoming the core support for green manufacturing and transformation.
