Introduction to the usage steps of a high flow nitrogen generator
Date: 2025-07-18Read: 1

A high flow nitrogen generator is an equipment used in laboratory and industrial production for on-site preparation of high-purity nitrogen gas. Its use must follow standardized procedures to ensure safe and stable operation. The following is a detailed introduction to the usage steps:

1、 Preparation before use
Equipment inspection
Appearance inspection: Confirm that the equipment casing is not damaged, the connecting pipelines (inlet and outlet) are not aged or cracked, and the interface seals (sealing rings, gaskets) are intact.
Power supply inspection: Check that the rated voltage of the equipment (such as AC220V/380V) is consistent with the power supply, and that the grounding circuit is firmly connected (grounding resistance ≤ 4 Ω) to avoid the risk of leakage.
Air source inspection: If the equipment requires external compressed air (most nitrogen generators use compressed air as raw material), confirm that the pressure (usually 0.6-0.8MPa) and flow rate of the air compressor meet the requirements of the generator, and that the compressed air has been purified (excluding water, oil, and dust) to avoid contaminating the internal filter element of the generator.
Parameter Confirmation
Set the nitrogen purity (such as 99.9%, 99.999%), output pressure (usually 0.1-0.6MPa), and flow rate (to be ≤ the maximum rated flow rate of the equipment) according to the requirements. Some equipment can be directly adjusted through the control panel, and high-precision models need to be pre-set through internal valves in advance.
2、 Power on operation
Connecting pipelines
Inlet end: Connect the compressed air pipe to the generator's "inlet" and secure it with clamps or threaded joints to ensure sealing (a small amount of sealant can be applied, and it is forbidden to use raw tape to block the air path).
Exhaust end: Connect the nitrogen output pipe to the "exhaust port", and the other end to nitrogen consuming equipment (such as chromatograph, reactor). If nitrogen needs to be stored, it can be connected to a nitrogen storage tank (pressure gauge needs to be installed to monitor pressure).
Exhaust pipe: Some equipment is equipped with a "tail gas exhaust port", which needs to be connected to a pipeline and led to the outside or ventilation area to avoid the accumulation of oxygen rich air (separated oxygen) indoors (high oxygen concentration poses a risk of explosion).
Boot Sequence
Open the compressed air source: Slowly open the valve of the air compressor to gradually increase the intake pressure to the required range of the equipment (to avoid sudden high pressure impact on the internal molecular sieve), observe the stability of the intake pressure gauge before proceeding to the next step.
Start the nitrogen generator: Turn on the power switch of the equipment, the indicator light on the control panel will light up, and the equipment will enter the self check state (some models will display "preheating", and the preheating time is usually 5-15 minutes, depending on the equipment model).
Waiting for purity to meet the standard: During the initial operation of the equipment, the output nitrogen purity may not meet the standard, and it needs to be detected by built-in sensors (some equipment is equipped with a purity display table). After the purity stabilizes at the set value (such as the 99.999% model displaying "5N"), the gas outlet valve can be opened to supply gas to the nitrogen consuming equipment.
3、 Monitoring and adjustment during operation
Real time parameter monitoring
Continuously observe the flow meter on the control panel (to ensure that the actual flow rate does not exceed the rated value, excessive flow may cause a decrease in purity), pressure gauge (the inlet and outlet pressures should be stable within the set range, and if there is excessive fluctuation, the gas source or pipeline should be checked for blockage), and purity indicator (if the purity suddenly decreases, it may be due to molecular sieve failure or gas leakage, and the machine needs to be stopped for troubleshooting).
Pay attention to the sound of equipment operation: During normal operation, it should be a steady sound of the fan or pump body running. If there is any abnormal noise (such as sharp noise or leakage sound), stop the machine immediately for inspection.
Pressure and flow regulation
If it is necessary to adjust the output pressure: slowly adjust it through the "pressure adjustment knob" of the device to avoid instantaneous overpressure damage to the nitrogen equipment;
If flow needs to be adjusted: Adjust the flow valve within the rated range of the equipment while observing changes in purity (as the flow increases, the purity may slightly decrease, ensuring that it still meets the usage requirements).
4、 Shutdown operation
Normal shutdown
Shut down nitrogen consuming equipment: First, cut off the nitrogen valve of downstream nitrogen consuming equipment to avoid backflow.
Turn off the nitrogen generator: Press the "stop" button on the equipment, wait for the internal pressure of the equipment to drop below 0.1MPa, and then turn off the power switch.
Turn off the air source: Close the air compressor or compressed air valve, release the residual pressure in the pipeline (open the generator outlet valve to vent).
Long term shutdown
If the shutdown exceeds one week, the equipment power should be disconnected, the intake and exhaust pipelines should be removed, and the interface should be sealed with a plug to prevent dust from entering;
For equipment using molecular sieves, it is recommended to maintain a slightly positive internal pressure (with a small amount of nitrogen filling) to avoid the entry of humid air that may cause the molecular sieve to fail.
Following the above steps can effectively ensure the safe operation of high flow nitrogen generators, while extending equipment life and ensuring stable nitrogen output quality. Different models of equipment may have differences in operational details, and it is recommended to adjust the operation based on the specific equipment manual.
