Kunming University of Science and Technology is a comprehensive national key university with a focus on engineering, a combination of science and engineering, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. It is a well-known university in China. Jointly established by the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau and the People's Government of Yunnan Province, it is a university implementing the national "Basic Capacity Building Project for Central and Western Universities", a university constructing the national "Characteristic Key Discipline Project", a university implementing the Ministry of Education's "Engineer Education and Training Plan", a recipient institution for Chinese government scholarships for international students studying in China, and has been selected for the national high-level university construction public graduate program, the national university innovation experimental plan, and the nationalCollege Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, Ministry of Education's New Engineering Research and Practice Project; *One of the six universities selected as national innovation talent training demonstration bases, * batch of demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, * base for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and technology transfer in higher education institutions, one of the two universities for establishing national technology transfer centers under China's "Hundred Schools Project", and a member unit of CDIO Engineering Education Alliance.

The school was founded in 1954 under the name Kunming Institute of Technology; In 1995, it was renamed Kunming University of Science and Technology; In 1999, the former Kunming University of Science and Technology merged with the former Yunnan University of Technology to form the new Kunming University of Science and Technology. On December 28, 2004, Yunnan Provincial Analysis and Testing Center was merged into a formal organization.
