With the increasingly stringent requirements of modern industry for material processing accuracy, surface quality, and thermal impact control, traditional mechanical processing and long pulse laser technology are no longer able to meet the needs of the manufacturing field. In this context, the Ultrafast Laser Processing Platform has emerged as a revolutionary tool in the fields of micro nano manufacturing, precision medical devices, semiconductors, aerospace, and new functional material processing, thanks to its extremely short pulse width ranging from femtosecond (fs) to picosecond (ps), peak power, and almost "zero thermal impact" processing characteristics.
1、 Technical principle: The leap from "thermal ablation" to "cold processing"
Ultrafast lasers typically refer to lasers with pulse durations ranging from 10 ⁻¹⁵ seconds (femtoseconds) to 10 ⁻¹² seconds (picoseconds). Its core advantage lies in its extremely short interaction time, which is much shorter than the energy transfer time between electrons and lattice in the material (usually in the picosecond range). When ultrafast laser irradiates the surface of a material, the photon energy is absorbed by the electronic system in a very short time, causing the electrons to quickly reach a high-temperature state, while the lattice has not yet responded. Subsequently, high-energy electrons eject the substance through Coulomb explosion or direct vaporization, achieving material removal.
This process is called "non hot melt processing" or "cold processing", and its essence is to directly break the chemical bonds of materials through nonlinear effects such as multiphoton ionization and avalanche ionization, rather than traditional thermal conduction melting. Therefore, the processing area hardly generates a heat affected zone (HAZ), avoiding problems such as melting edges, cracks, residual stresses, and material deformation, making it particularly suitable for materials that are brittle, thermally sensitive, or require high precision.
2、 System composition: A precision engineering platform that integrates multiple disciplines
A complete ultrafast laser processing platform is a complex system that integrates optics, mechanics, control, software, and automation. It mainly consists of the following parts:
1. Ultrafast laser source: The core is femtosecond or picosecond fiber laser, solid-state laser (such as Yb: KGW, Ti: sapphire). The common wavelengths are infrared (1030nm), green light (515nm), or ultraviolet (343nm), which can be selected based on the absorption characteristics of the material. The average power ranges from a few watts to several hundred watts, and the repetition rate is adjustable.
2. Beam transmission and control system: including mirrors, beam amplifiers, polarization controllers, etc., to ensure stable laser transmission. Equipped with a high-speed galvanometer scanner system, it can accurately control the movement of the laser focus in the X-Y plane within milliseconds, achieving high-speed processing of complex shapes.
3. Focusing and motion platform: Using an F - θ lens to focus the laser onto micro - or even sub micron sized spots. For 3D machining, a high-precision electric Z-axis or five axis linkage worktable is equipped to achieve dynamic adjustment of the focal plane and complex surface machining.
4. Visual positioning and monitoring system: Integrated CCD camera or microscopic imaging system, used for workpiece alignment, real-time monitoring of machining process, and quality inspection, to improve machining accuracy and automation level.
5. Control system and software: Control software based on PC or embedded systems, supporting CAD graphic import, path planning, process parameter settings (power, speed, pulse frequency, scanning strategy), and batch processing, with a friendly human-computer interaction interface.
6. Auxiliary system: including dust removal device, cooling system, gas protection (such as nitrogen, argon) to prevent oxidation, and enclosed protective cover that meets Class 1 safety standards.
3、 Technical advantages and application areas
1. Ultra high precision: It can achieve processing resolution at the micrometer or even nanometer level, suitable for precision manufacturing of micropores, microgrooves, and microstructures.
2. Wide material adaptability: It can process almost all solid materials such as metals, ceramics, glass, polymers, composite materials, sapphires, diamonds, etc., especially adept at handling hard and brittle materials that are difficult to process by traditional methods.
3. No thermal damage: Suitable for biomedical devices (such as heart stents, artificial crystals), flexible electronics, photovoltaic cells, and other applications that are sensitive to heat.
4. High flexibility: No need for molds, quickly switch processing patterns through software programming, suitable for small batch and multi variety production.
Typical application scenarios:
-Precision medical devices: cardiovascular stent cutting, ophthalmic surgical tool microfabrication, microfluidic chip manufacturing.
-Consumer electronics: sapphire cover cutting for smartphone cameras, OLED screen peeling, fingerprint recognition module drilling.
-Semiconductors and Optoelectronics: wafer slicing, through silicon via (TSV) processing, optical waveguide etching.
-New energy: lithium battery ear cutting, diaphragm drilling, photovoltaic PERC cell slotting.
-Aerospace: Processing of turbine blade film holes, manufacturing of stealth coating microstructures.
-Research frontiers: Preparation of new functional structures such as superhydrophobic surfaces, photonic crystals, and micro/nano robots.
4、 Challenges and Development Trends
Despite the significant advantages of ultrafast laser technology, it still faces challenges such as high cost and relatively low processing efficiency (especially for large-area processing). Future development trends include:
-Higher power and speed: Improve average power and scanning speed, enhance production efficiency.
-Intelligent and adaptive control: Combining AI algorithms to achieve process optimization and real-time quality feedback.
-Multi beam parallel processing: Through beam splitting technology, multi-point synchronous processing is achieved, greatly improving production capacity.
-Green manufacturing: reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, and promoting sustainable development.
The ultrafast laser processing platform is not only a representative of advanced manufacturing technology, but also a core engine driving micro nano technology, intelligent manufacturing, and industrial upgrading. With the decrease in laser costs and the improvement of system integration, ultrafast laser technology is moving from the laboratory to large-scale industrial applications, ushering in a new era of "what you see is what you get" precision manufacturing and illuminating the microscopic world of future industry.
