Systematic method for improving the reliability of measurement results of high-frequency infrared carbon sulfur analyzer
Date: 2025-12-16Read: 4

As a key equipment for quantitative analysis of carbon and sulfur elements in modern metal materials, the reliability of high-frequency infrared carbon and sulfur analyzer's measurement results directly affects the accuracy of material grade determination, production process control, and product quality evaluation. This technology combines high-frequency induction combustion and infrared absorption detection, and its analysis process involves multiple links such as high-temperature chemical reactions, gas transmission, physical detection, and signal processing. To effectively improve the accuracy of measurement results, it is necessary to establish a complete quality assurance system that covers instrument status, sample processing, combustion conditions, detection systems, and data management.

Basic calibration and performance verification of instrument systems

The stability of instrument metrological performance is the cornerstone of data reliability. Periodic comprehensive calibration of equipment should be carried out in accordance with national metrological verification regulations or relevant standards. The focus of calibration work is to construct an accurate working curve, which requires the use of a series of nationally certified standard substances. The content range should cover daily detection needs and include standard sample points close to the detection lower and upper limits. For high-frequency induction combustion systems, it is necessary to ensure the stability and repeatability of output power, which is a prerequisite for achieving sample combustion. The linearity and sensitivity of infrared detection systems also need to be verified by analyzing different levels of standard substances to observe whether their response signals conform to the expected relationship. In addition to annual periodic calibration, it is recommended to use standard substances that are similar in content to the matrix of the sample being tested for intermediate point validation before analyzing each batch of samples, in order to monitor the short-term stability of the instrument status.

Standard procedures for sample preparation and pretreatment

The state and processing method of the sample are important factors affecting combustion efficiency and release kinetics. Sampling should ensure representativeness, especially for heterogeneous materials such as cast iron and alloys. The surface of the sample should be properly cleaned to remove oil stains, oxide coatings, or other attachments that may introduce additional carbon and sulfur signals or interfere with the combustion process. The particle size and quality of the sample need to be controlled within a reasonable range. It is usually recommended to weigh the sample near the recommended amount by the instrument and ensure that it can be placed at the bottom of the crucible and covered with flux. The selection and addition amount of fluxing agents (such as pure tungsten particles and pure tin particles) should be standardized and consistent. Their function is not only to increase the combustion temperature, but also to regulate the fluidity, coverage, and chemical reaction environment of the molten material, in order to promote the oxidation and release of carbon and sulfur elements. At the same time, the blank values of the flux and crucible should be strictly monitored and reduced to a stable low level through methods such as pre burning.

Parameterized Control of Combustion and Analysis Process

A stable combustion process and controlled analysis conditions are key to obtaining reproducible data. The power setting, oxygen purity and flow rate, as well as the pressure of the analysis gas path of the high-frequency furnace need to be optimized and stable. Oxygen, as a carrier gas, insufficient purity or flow rate fluctuations can affect combustion efficiency and gas transmission. The placement of samples in the crucible, the order of adding fluxes, and other operational details should also be standardized. During the analysis process, by observing the shape of the release curve (such as peak shape and peak time), a preliminary judgment can be made on the degree of combustion. A smooth, symmetrical, and stable peak time release curve is usually a sign of smooth combustion and transmission. For abnormal curves (such as trailing, bimodal, and excessively wide peak shapes), the cause should be analyzed, and problems with the sample, flux, combustion conditions, or gas path should be investigated.

Maintenance and management of detection and pneumatic systems

The infrared detection pool is the core sensor for measurement, and its cleanliness and stability are crucial. The entrance and exit windows of the detection pool need to be kept clean to avoid contamination by dust or condensate generated by combustion, otherwise it will reduce the luminous flux and affect the detection sensitivity. The airtightness of the pneumatic system and the effectiveness of desiccants and dust collectors directly affect the stability of background signals and the effective transmission of gases. Regularly inspect and replace failed desiccants (such as magnesium perchlorate, anhydrous sodium carbonate) and dust filters, clean combustion tubes and dust collectors. The entire gas path, including connecting pipelines, valves, and joints, should be kept unobstructed and sealed to prevent leakage from causing low or fluctuating results.

Data analysis, recording, and measurement uncertainty assessment

After obtaining the raw data, scientific processing and careful evaluation are the final quality checkpoints. Checking the repeatability of parallel sample determination results is a direct way to determine the effectiveness of a single analysis. All analysis records, including sample information, sample size, calibration curve details, verification values of standard substances, instrument key parameter settings, and any observed special circumstances, should be archived in a complete and traceable manner. More importantly, it should be recognized that there is uncertainty in any measurement. It is recommended to systematically evaluate the main sources of measurement uncertainty, such as the uncertainty of standard substances themselves, the uncertainty introduced by weighing, the uncertainty introduced by instrument calibration curve fitting, and the uncertainty introduced by measurement repeatability. By reasonably evaluating and reporting measurement uncertainty, a more scientific and rigorous range of intervals can be provided for the interpretation and application of analysis results.

Support for personnel capability and quality management system

Ultimately, the effective implementation of all technical measures relies on professional personnel and a sound management system. Operators should understand the basic principles of high-frequency combustion and infrared absorption, be proficient in operating instruments, and have the ability to identify common abnormal phenomena and conduct preliminary troubleshooting. The laboratory should establish and maintain a complete quality management system document, covering equipment management, sample management, standard operating procedures, quality control procedures, and data audit system. Regular personnel training, technical exchanges, and trend analysis of quality control data are the intrinsic driving forces behind the continuous improvement of analytical skills.

By implementing the comprehensive and systematic strategy from instrument benchmark, sample source, process control, system maintenance, data evaluation to system assurance, the technical performance of high-frequency infrared carbon sulfur analyzer can be transformed into stable, reliable and highly confident quantitative analysis data, providing solid technical support and quality assurance for materials science, metallurgical industry and manufacturing industry.
