Desktop low-speed centrifuge maintenance guide: from daily cleaning to rotor sterilization
Date: 2025-11-04Read: 1

1、 Daily cleaning: a key step in basic maintenance

Cleaning frequency and range
Daily cleaning: After each centrifugation, wipe the inner wall of the centrifuge chamber, rotor surface, and sealing ring with a soft dry cloth or 75% ethanol cotton cloth to prevent residual samples from corroding metals or breeding microorganisms.
Weekly deep cleaning: Disassemble detachable parts, clean with neutral detergent, rinse with clean water and air dry. Do not use strong acids, strong alkalis or organic solvents.
Key areas: Drainage holes at the bottom of the centrifugal chamber, rotor threaded interface.
Cleaning tools and taboos
Recommended tools: specialized centrifuge cleaning brush, dust-free cloth, compressed air tank.
Taboo behavior: Directly spraying liquid into the centrifuge chamber, using steel wire balls or hard brushes for cleaning.
2、 Rotor maintenance: the core operation to extend the service life
Daily inspection and balancing
Appearance inspection: Check the rotor for cracks, deformation, or corrosion before each use.
配平要求:
Poor quality: The quality difference of the opposite centrifugal tube is ≤ 0.1g.
Volume difference: Liquid volume difference ≤ 10%.
Case warning: A certain laboratory's rotor broke due to unbalanced operation, causing damage to the centrifugal chamber with flying debris, and the repair cost exceeded ¥ 2000.
Storage and anti-corrosion
Short term storage: Immediately wipe the rotor dry with a dry cloth after use and place it in a dry and ventilated place to avoid rusting in a humid environment.
Long term disuse: Apply anti rust oil to the metal surface, wrap it with a dust cover, and regularly rotate the rotor to prevent jamming.
3、 Rotor sterilization: the process of medical testing scenarios
Applicable scenarios for sterilization
Treatment of infectious samples: After centrifuging HIV, hepatitis B virus and other samples, the rotor needs to be sterilized to prevent cross contamination.
Cell culture rotor: Regular sterilization to avoid microbial contamination affecting cell activity.
Regulatory requirement: Comply with the "Sterilization of Reusable Instruments" clause in the "General Requirements for Laboratory Biosafety".
Sterilization methods and operations
High temperature and high pressure sterilization:
Condition: 121 ℃, 15-20 minutes.
Steps:
Disassemble detachable components.
Place the rotor in a sterilization bag or specialized sterilization box to avoid direct contact with the inner wall of the sterilization pot.
After sterilization, cool naturally to room temperature and rapid cooling is prohibited.
Chemical immersion sterilization:
Applicable scenario: Plastic rotors that are not resistant to high temperatures.
Method: Soak in a 2% glutaraldehyde solution for 30 minutes, rinse with water, and then air dry.
Taboo behavior: Use chlorine containing disinfectants on aluminum alloy rotors.
4、 Regular calibration and deep maintenance
Calibration cycle and content
Speed calibration: Use a standard tachometer every six months to verify that the actual speed of the centrifuge has an error of ≤ 2% compared to the displayed value.
Temperature calibration: If the equipment has cooling function, use a temperature recorder to detect the deviation between the centrifugal chamber temperature and the set value every year, which should be ≤ 1 ℃.
Dynamic balance test: Use a dynamic balance meter to check the rotor balance every quarter, with an unbalance amount of ≤ 0.5g · cm.
Professional maintenance and replacement of accessories
Motor maintenance: Every 2 years, engineers dismantle the motor, clean the carbon brush dust, or inspect the brushless motor drive module.
Sealing ring replacement: If liquid leakage or aging and cracking of the sealing ring is found in the centrifugal chamber, replace it immediately.
Bearing lubrication: Apply high-temperature grease to the rotor bearings every 3 years to reduce operating noise.
5、 Safety regulations and emergency response
Operation taboos
Prohibit centrifugation of flammable and explosive liquids.
Prohibit overspeed operation.
Do not open the lid or forcefully brake during the centrifugation process.
Abnormal situation handling
Abnormal vibration: Immediately press the emergency brake button, stop the machine and check for rotor balance and looseness.
Odor/smoke: Cut off the power and contact maintenance personnel to check the motor or circuit board.
Sample leakage: Wear protective gloves, clean the leaked liquid with absorbent paper, and then disinfect the contaminated area with 75% ethanol.
6、 Maintain records and archive management
Record content
Date, operator, reagents used, and test results for each cleaning, sterilization, and calibration.
Record of replacement of accessories.
Fault repair records.
Archive preservation
Paper records should be kept for at least 5 years, and electronic files should be backed up to the cloud for easy traceability of device history.
Conclusion
Through systematic daily cleaning, rotor maintenance, sterilization treatment, and regular calibration, the service life of the desktop low-speed centrifuge can be significantly extended, while ensuring the accuracy and safety of medical test samples. It is recommended that the laboratory develop a "Centrifuge Maintenance SOP" and train operators to strictly follow it.
