The quadrupole mass spectrometer is a commonly used mass spectrometer, widely used in fields such as chemical analysis, environmental monitoring, drug analysis, food safety, and life sciences. Due to its simple structure, relatively low cost, and fast analysis speed, it has become a very important type in mass spectrometry technology.

quadrupole mass spectrometerThe working process:
1. Ionization: the sample is ionized in the ion source by means of electron bombardment, electric spray, etc. to form charged particles (ions).
2. Quality selection: Charged ions are sent into a quadrupole mass analyzer. In a quadrupole, the change in electric field allows only ions with a specific mass to charge ratio to pass through the quadrupole. Specifically, the quadrupole electric field causes ions with different m/z values to move along different trajectories in the electric field, and only ions that meet specific conditions can reach the detector through the quadrupole.
3. Ion detection: Ions passing through the quadrupole ultimately reach the ion detector, generating a signal. Based on the strength of the signal, the number or concentration of ions can be obtained for further data analysis.
Working Principle:
1. DC electric field: A static electric field is formed by applying a DC voltage to a pair of electrodes of a quadrupole. The function of this electric field is to screen out ions that are too heavy or too light in weight.
2. Radio frequency electric field: Another pair of electrodes is subjected to radio frequency voltage to form an alternating electric field. The function of radio frequency electric field is to make ions move along different trajectories in the electric field, and ions with different mass to charge ratios move along different trajectories. Only ions with mass to charge ratios that match the radio frequency electric field conditions can pass through the quadrupole.
Advantages of quadrupole mass spectrometer:
1. Simple structure: The structure is relatively simple, easy to operate, and the maintenance cost is low.
2. Fast scanning speed: With a high scanning speed, it can quickly perform mass analysis of ions.
3. High sensitivity: capable of detecting at lower concentrations, suitable for trace analysis.
4. Wide applicability: It can be widely used in fields such as chemical analysis, drug testing, environmental monitoring, food safety, etc.
