The quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) is a commonly used mass spectrometry analysis instrument, widely used in fields such as chemical analysis, environmental monitoring, biological research, and drug detection. Its main working principle is to use a quadrupole electric field to screen and detect charged particles, which can efficiently analyze the chemical composition of samples, especially gas and liquid samples. It has the advantages of high sensitivity, short analysis time, and simple operation, and has become an indispensable part of mass spectrometry technology.

quadrupole mass spectrometerThe specific working process:
1. Ionization process:
The sample is first introduced into an ion source for ionization treatment. Electron bombardment or other methods in ion sources can cause sample molecules to shed or accept electrons, forming charged particles (ions).
2. Quality selection:
After the ions enter the quadrupole, the electric field inside the quadrupole begins to take effect. The quadrupole electric field is alternating, with a certain frequency and amplitude, and the stable trajectory of ions depends on their mass to charge ratio (m/z). Only ions with a mass to charge ratio that matches the electric field parameters of the quadrupole can stably pass through the quadrupole, while other ions are deflected by the electric field and cannot pass through the quadrupole.
3. Ion detection:
The ions successfully passing through the quadrupole will enter the detector, which measures the number and energy of the ions, converts them into electrical signals, and forms a mass spectrum. By analyzing the mass spectrum, the composition information of the sample can be obtained.
4. Mass spectrum:
The horizontal axis of the mass spectrum represents the mass to charge ratio (m/z), and the vertical axis represents the abundance or intensity of ions. Each peak represents one or more ions with the same mass to charge ratio, and detailed information about the chemical composition of the sample can be obtained from the mass spectrum.
Characteristics of quadrupole mass spectrometer:
1. High sensitivity:
It has high sensitivity to low concentration samples and can detect trace amounts of substances.
2. Quick analysis:
Being able to complete sample analysis in a short period of time usually has a fast scanning speed. When combined with traditional chromatographic analysis techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), the analysis efficiency can be significantly improved.
3. Good stability:
High stability, suitable for long-term continuous use, and the instrument maintenance is relatively simple and easy to operate.
4. Widely applicable:
It can be used for various types of sample analysis, including gas, liquid, solid, etc., and is widely used in environmental monitoring, food safety, drug detection, chemical reaction research and other fields.
5. Strong adjustability:
The quality selection range is wide and can adapt to different experimental needs. Users can select different mass to charge ratio ranges for analysis by adjusting the electric field parameters of the quadrupole.
