1、 Lithium tetraborate (Li ₂ B ₄ O ₇)
1. Nature:
(1) Appearance: White crystals.
(2) Solubility: soluble in water, weakly alkaline in aqueous solution, soluble in hydrochloric acid, insoluble in ethanol and other organic solvents.
(3) Thermal stability: It has excellent thermal stability.
(4) Toxicity: The acute toxicity LD50 is 500 mg/kg (orally administered to rats).
2. Application:
(1) Analytical chemistry: commonly used for melt sampling in X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).
(2) Metal smelting: used for metal smelting and enamel manufacturing.
(3) Mixed flux: mixed with lithium metaborate in proportion, used for processing refractory samples such as iron ore, polymetallic ore, etc.
2、 Lithium metaborate (LiBO ₂)
1. Nature:
(1) Appearance: Colorless triclinic crystal with pearl luster.
(2) Solubility: Easily soluble in water.
(3) Thermal stability: The melting point is 840 ℃.
(4) Toxicity: The acute toxicity LD50 is 500 mg/kg (orally administered to rats).
2. Application:
(1) Analytical Chemistry: Mainly used for melting sample preparation in X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).

3、 The difference between lithium tetraborate and lithium metaborate
1. Chemical composition:
-The chemical formula of lithium tetraborate is Li ₂ B ₄ O ₇, and the chemical formula of lithium metaborate is LiBO ₂.
2. Physical properties:
(1) Lithium tetraborate is a white crystal, while lithium metaborate is a colorless crystal.
(2) The aqueous solution of lithium tetraborate is weakly alkaline, while lithium metaborate is not explicitly mentioned.
3. Application differences:
(1) The two are often used in combination to optimize the effect of melt sampling. For example, at 1000 ° C, mixing lithium tetraborate and lithium metaborate in a ratio of 67:33 has a better melting effect on geological samples.
(2) When lithium metaborate is used alone, its precipitation effect on certain insoluble elements (such as niobium, tantalum, etc.) may be insufficient, and sodium hydroxide needs to be added.
