Diesel locomotive engine oil - Determination of alkali value (calculated as KOH)
Date: 2025-12-19Read: 1

GB/T 17038-2025 Diesel Engine Oil for Diesel Locomotives

scope
This document specifies the product classification and labeling, technical requirements and testing methods, inspection rules and labeling, packaging, storage and transportation, and delivery acceptance of third-generation, fourth generation, and fifth generation diesel engine oils made from refined mineral lubricating oil as the base oil and mixed with various additives.
This document applies to diesel engine oil used in railway diesel locomotives, and zinc containing oil is only suitable for lubrication of non silver bearing diesel locomotives.

Terms and definitions
There are no terms or definitions that need to be defined in this document.

Product classification and labeling
Product Category
This document categorizes diesel engine oil for internal combustion locomotives into five types based on quality levels: third-generation zinc containing type, fourth generation zinc containing type, fourth generation non zinc type, fifth generation zinc containing type, and fifth generation non zinc type. Third generation oil contains 40 viscosity grades; Each variety of fourth and fifth generation oil contains two viscosity grades, 40 and 20W-40.
Third generation oil: The typical base value (calculated as KOH) is 10mg/g, suitable for Dongfeng series diesel locomotives.
Fourth generation oil: The typical base value (calculated as KOH) is 13mg/g, suitable for Dongfeng series diesel locomotives. Locomotives containing silver bearings can only use non zinc locomotive oil.
Five generation oil: The typical base value (calculated as KOH) of zinc containing oil is 17mg/g, and the typical base value (calculated as KOH) of non zinc oil is 13mg/g or 17mg/g. It is suitable for Dongfeng, Harmony, Fuxing and other new series diesel locomotives.
Product Marking
Diesel engine oil products for internal combustion locomotives are marked as:Viscosity grade Variety code Diesel locomotive engine oil
Example: 20W-40 fifth generation zinc containing diesel engine oil for diesel locomotives.

Technical requirements and testing methods
The technical requirements and testing methods for diesel engine oil of internal combustion locomotives shall comply with the provisions of Table 1.
