Testing standards for formaldehyde VOC testing chamber
Date: 2025-07-01Read: 2
The formaldehyde VOC (volatile organic compound) testing chamber is used to test the release of formaldehyde and other VOCs in materials and products, especially in indoor environments and quality control of furniture products. Testing standards typically rely on national or international standards to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. The following are common formaldehyde and VOC testing standards and their applications:
Testing methods and steps
Environmental conditions inside the test chamber: The interior of the formaldehyde VOC test chamber should be set to standard environmental conditions, such as temperature (23 ° C ± 2 ° C) and humidity (50% ± 5% RH).
Sample preparation: The test sample should be prepared according to the corresponding standard size. For furniture products, they are usually small samples or small pieces cut from the product.
Air flow rate: The air flow rate inside the test box should be kept stable to ensure the repeatability of the test results.
Air exchange: Some standards require regular air exchange or circulation during the testing process to simulate the airflow state of the product in the actual environment.
Analysis methods: Common analysis methods include gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), etc. Different VOCs will have different detection methods.
test project
Formaldehyde release amount: During the testing process, the release rate or total release amount of formaldehyde over a certain period of time will be measured. Generally, sampling and testing need to be conducted within 24 hours or longer.
VOC emissions: In addition to formaldehyde, other volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, xylene, etc. need to be measured. These harmful gases can affect indoor air quality, and the test results directly affect the environmental rating of the product.
Total volatile organic compounds (TVOC): TVOC is the sum of all volatile organic compounds, and measuring this value can help evaluate the overall air pollution level of the material.
Result determination
The test results are usually expressed in mg/m ³ (milligrams per cubic meter) to indicate the concentrations of formaldehyde and VOCs. According to different standards, the test results of the product need to meet or fall below the specified limits. For example:
Formaldehyde emission: If it exceeds the standard limit, the product may be judged as unqualified and materials or processes need to be improved.
Total VOC emissions: This test helps detect the comprehensive release of harmful gases from products, and standard requirements usually vary depending on the type and purpose of the product.
Common Qualification Standards
Formaldehyde: The general limit is below 0.10mg/m ³.
TVOC: It is usually required that the TVOC value be below 0.5mg/m ³, and some special environmental requirements may be more stringent.
Other VOCs: According to standards, the content of substances such as benzene and toluene is generally required to not exceed the safety limits specified in the standards.
Precautions
Sample preparation before testing: Ensure that the sample is prepared in accordance with the standard specifications to avoid inaccurate test results due to improper sample preparation.
Instrument calibration: Testing equipment and instruments must be calibrated before testing to ensure the accuracy of data.
Environmental control: Maintain the stability of the testing environment, including temperature, humidity, airflow, etc., to reduce the interference of external factors on the test results.
Through the above standards and testing methods, the laboratory can comprehensively evaluate the release levels of formaldehyde and VOC, ensuring that the product meets relevant environmental and health safety requirements.
