Lubricant "Physical Examination" Project: Why is mechanical impurity analysis indispensable?
Date: 2025-10-13Read: 0

The analysis of mechanical impurities in lubricating oil is the core link to ensure equipment safety and extend oil life, and its importance is reflected in the following five key dimensions:

1、 Reflecting the purity of oil products and optimizing production processes
Mechanical impurities, as solid suspended solids in oil that are insoluble in specified solvents, directly reflect the degree of refinement of the oil. By detecting mechanical impurities, production enterprises can accurately locate pollution sources in the production process (such as impure raw materials, equipment wear, storage pollution, etc.), thereby optimizing production processes and improving product quality.
2、 Prevent equipment wear and reduce the risk of malfunctions
Mechanical impurities act as "invisible killers" in lubricating oil, and their presence can damage the integrity of the oil film, exacerbating equipment friction and wear. Specifically manifested as:
Direct wear: Hard particles roll or slide between friction pairs, causing surface scratches and pitting corrosion;
Catalytic effect: Metal debris catalyzes the oxidation of oil products at high temperatures, generating acidic substances that further corrode metal surfaces;
Risk of blockage: Accumulation of impurities may block the oil circuit, nozzle, and filter, leading to interruption of fuel supply or local overheating.
Case: A certain steel enterprise found that the impurity content in the lubricating oil of compressor bearings was abnormally high through regular testing of mechanical impurities in lubricating oil. The lubricating oil was replaced in a timely manner and the oil circuit was cleaned, avoiding a fire accident caused by bearing overheating and reducing direct economic losses by more than ten million yuan.
3、 Guide product development to meet differentiated needs
There are differences in the tolerance of mechanical impurities in lubricating oil among different devices. For example:
High precision equipment: requires lubricating oil with extremely low mechanical impurity content (usually ≤ 0.005%) to avoid damage to precision parts by small particles;
Industrial heavy-duty equipment: A certain amount of mechanical impurities (such as ≤ 0.5%) may be allowed, but it is necessary to ensure that the impurities are gel like substances introduced by additives rather than foreign pollutants.
Through mechanical impurity analysis, R&D personnel can adjust additive formulations or optimize filtration processes to develop high-performance lubricants that better meet market demand.
4、 Extend the lifespan of oil products and reduce usage costs
Mechanical impurities can accelerate the oxidation and deterioration of lubricating oil, shortening its service life. Specifically manifested as:
Oxidation catalysis: Metal particles in impurities can catalyze the reaction between oil and oxygen, generating acidic substances and precipitates;
Viscosity changes: Impurity accumulation may alter the rheological properties of oil products, leading to abnormal viscosity;
Additive consumption: Impurities react with additives, reducing their effectiveness.
Data: A certain enterprise has extended the service life of lubricating oil from 3000 hours to 6000 hours by strictly controlling the mechanical impurity content of lubricating oil, saving over one million yuan in annual lubricating oil procurement costs.
5、 Comply with industry standards and ensure compliance
The content of mechanical impurities is an important indicator of lubricant quality, which must comply with national standards (such as GB/T 511) and industry standards. For example:
New lubricating oil: usually requires a mechanical impurity content of ≤ 0.005% (considered "zero");
Lubricating oil during operation: When the mechanical impurity content in industrial gear oil is ≥ 0.5%, the oil needs to be changed;
Special equipment: such as aviation turbine engine lubricating oil, the mechanical impurity content must be strictly controlled below 0.001%.
