Essential for Petrochemical Oil Testing: Selection Guide for Low Temperature Kinematic Viscometer
Date: 2025-08-14Read: 0

In the petrochemical industry, the low-temperature kinematic viscosity of oil products is a core indicator for evaluating their low-temperature fluidity, pumpability, and safety of use, which directly affects the application efficiency of fuel, lubricants, and other products in cold regions. Choosing a suitable low-temperature kinematic viscosity tester is the key to ensuring accurate detection data, meeting industry standards, and improving production efficiency.

1、 Clarify the testing object and industry standards: a prerequisite for selection
There are various types of oil products in the petrochemical industry, such as diesel, lubricating oil, aviation kerosene, hydraulic oil, etc. The low-temperature kinematic viscosity testing of different oil products needs to follow specific standards, which directly determine the performance requirements of the instrument. Before selecting, it is necessary to clarify:
1. Check the type of oil product
-Light oil products (such as gasoline and kerosene): Low temperature viscosity, requiring instruments with high-precision low viscosity measurement capabilities (usually 1-100 cSt), and fine capillary inner diameters (0.4-1.0mm).
-Heavy oil products (such as diesel, gear oil, heavy oil): high viscosity at low temperatures (possibly exceeding 1000 cSt), requiring instruments to support high viscosity measurement, equipped with coarse inner diameter capillary tubes (2.0~4.0mm), and avoiding oil solidification and pipeline blockage at low temperatures.
-Special oil products (such as aviation turbine fuel and polar lubricating oil): need to be tested at extremely low temperatures (-40 ℃~-60 ℃), with strict requirements for the low-temperature temperature control ability of the instrument.
2. Industry standards followed
The viscosity detection standards in the petrochemical industry are mandatory, and instruments must meet the requirements of the standards for temperature range, measurement accuracy, and capillary specifications:
-Domestic standards: GB/T 265 "Determination of kinematic viscosity of petroleum products and algorithm for dynamic viscometer" (applicable to most oil products), GB/T 11137 "Determination of kinematic viscosity of dark petroleum products (countercurrent method) and algorithm for dynamic viscometer" (applicable to dark oil products such as heavy oil).
-International standards: ASTM D445 (American Society for Testing and Materials standard widely used in global trade), ISO 3104 (International Organization for Standardization standard).
-Special standard: Aviation kerosene must comply with GJB 1177 "Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuel", requiring viscosity detection accuracy of ± 1% at -40 ℃.
2、 Focusing on core performance indicators: Ensuring precise detection
In response to the characteristics of "low temperature, high viscosity, and batch testing" in the petrochemical industry, the following performance indicators of the instrument need to be carefully considered:
1. Low temperature control range and accuracy
-Temperature control range: Cover the target temperature according to the detection requirements. Conventional petrochemical testing requires -40 ℃~20 ℃; Oil or aviation fuel used in extremely cold regions requires -60 ℃~0 ℃; Special scenarios require temperatures below -80 ℃.
-Temperature control accuracy: It must reach ± 0.1 ℃, otherwise temperature fluctuations will cause viscosity measurement errors (viscosity errors may exceed 5% for every 1 ℃ deviation in temperature). It is recommended to choose a model that uses "cascade compressor refrigeration+PID intelligent temperature control", which can still maintain stable temperature control below -40 ℃.
2. Viscosity measurement range and capillary compatibility
-Measurement range: It needs to cover the viscosity range of the tested oil. For example:
-Diesel has a viscosity of about 50-200 cSt at -20 ℃;
-The viscosity of gear oil may reach 1000~5000 cSt at -30 ℃;
-The viscosity of aviation kerosene is about 10-50 cSt at -40 ℃.
The instrument range should include at least 1.5 times the target viscosity.
-Capillary configuration: Multiple sets of standard capillaries with different inner diameters (in accordance with GB/T 265 or ASTM D445 calibration requirements) should be equipped, and quick replacement should be supported.
3. Timing accuracy and data stability
The formula for calculating kinematic viscosity is "viscosity=capillary constant x flow time", and timing accuracy directly affects the results. Must meet:
-Timing accuracy ≤ 0.01 seconds (to avoid errors caused by manual stopwatches);
-Repeated measurement deviation (RSD) ≤ 0.5%.
It is recommended to choose a model with "dual photoelectric sensors" and trigger the timing through the upper and lower marking lines to reduce the interference of liquid surface tension on timing.
3、 Considering Automation and Efficiency: Adapting to Petrochemical Batch Testing Scenarios
The quality inspection workshop of petrochemical enterprises usually requires high-frequency and multi sample testing, and the automation level of instruments directly affects efficiency:
1. Automation function
-Automatic sampling: supports batch loading of sample disks (≥ 20 bits), especially suitable for unmanned testing at night;
-Automatic cleaning: After detection, the capillary tube can be automatically rinsed with solvent to avoid residual contamination (heavy oil products are prone to residue, manual cleaning is time-consuming);
-Automatic data processing: directly calculate viscosity values, generate reports in accordance with GB/T 265 or ASTM D445 formats, support Excel export or integration with LIMS system (laboratory information management system).
2. Convenient operation
-Touch screen+preset detection program: can store commonly used oil detection methods, one click start, reduce operator training costs;
-Visualization of Low Temperature Bath: Using a double-layer vacuum glass bath, the flow state of the sample can be visually observed, making it easy to identify abnormalities.
4、 Assessing reliability and maintenance costs: key to long-term use
Petrochemical testing instruments require long-term stable operation (8-12 hours of daily start-up), and reliability and maintenance costs cannot be ignored:
1. Reliability of refrigeration system
The core of low-temperature temperature control is the refrigeration system, and priority should be given to:
-Imported compressor, capable of stable operation below -40 ℃, with a lifespan of ≥ 5 years;
-Equipped with "over temperature protection" and "overload protection" functions, it can prevent low-temperature bath freezing or compressor damage (especially in winter when the ambient temperature is too low).
2. Consumables and Maintenance
-Capillary tube: Made of high borosilicate glass material, resistant to organic solvent corrosion, with a single tube service life of ≥ 500 tests;
-Low temperature medium: Priority should be given to using ethanol water mixture (with a low temperature of up to -60 ℃ and low cost), avoiding the use of toxic ethylene glycol solutions;
-After sales support: The brand needs to set up service points in the concentrated area of the petrochemical industry to ensure a response within 24 hours of any malfunctions.
5、 Practical steps for selection: from requirements to decision-making
1. Sort out the list of requirements: clarify the type of oil to be tested, low testing temperature, annual inspection measurement, and the standards to be met;
2. Filter the models that match the parameters: sort them by "temperature control range → measurement accuracy → automation function", and exclude options with parameters that do not meet the standards;
3. Field testing: Test with standard oil samples at the target low temperature to verify data repeatability and stability;
4. Compare total costs: In addition to the purchase price, calculate the consumables, maintenance, and energy consumption costs over a 5-year period, and choose the one with better cost-effectiveness.
