Daily maintenance of gas chromatograph
Date: 2025-09-23Read: 0
gas chromatography(GC) helps scientists ensure the safety, quality, and purity of food, air, water, and medicine; Determine the composition and consistency of fuel and chemicals; And detecting controlled drugs in sports events.
A wide range of sensitive detector options are available in the industry, including flame ionization detectors, thermal conductivity detectors, miniature electron capture detectors, nitrogen phosphorus detectors, mass selective detectors, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and an improved flame photometric detector. The improved flame photometric detector is 5 times more sensitive to sulfur and 10 times more sensitive to phosphorus than the previous detector. Compared with the standard FPD, it has sensitivity to both sulfur and phosphorus. Other detectors available through Agilent partners include SCD, pulse flame photometric detector (PFPD), and atomic emission spectroscopy detector (AED).
Daily maintenance:
Sample inlet cleaning:
Clean the glass liner and splitter plate after each use, ultrasonically clean with acetone or toluene, and dry to avoid residual contamination.
Regularly replace the injection pad and liner to prevent air leakage or abnormal peak shape.
Column management:
New columns or columns that have not been used for a long time need to undergo aging treatment (such as programmed heating to the highest tolerance temperature) to remove residual solvents.
When the separation effect decreases, the column head can be cut off or replaced with a new column to avoid pollution diffusion.
Detector maintenance:
FID detector: Regularly clean the nozzle and collection electrode, and lightly grind with fine sandpaper when carbon buildup is severe.
TCD detector: In case of slight contamination, clean with carrier gas at high temperature (400 ℃, 4-8 hours), and in case of severe contamination, soak in solvent.
Regular deep maintenance:
Gas system:
Check the purity of the carrier gas (high-purity grade is required), and regularly replace the gas purifier packing (such as molecular sieve, silica gel).
Use soapy water to check for air leaks at the air circuit interface and replace the seals in a timely manner.
Temperature control system:
Calibrate the temperature control module to ensure stable temperature of the column temperature box and detector, and avoid exceeding the programmed temperature limit.
Circuit and software:
Clean the circuit board after power failure, blow the slots with nitrogen, and wipe organic pollutants with alcohol.
Update workstation software, record maintenance logs for tracking instrument status.
