Rockwell hardness of plastic ball indentation: the "hardness scale" for plastic products
Date: 2025-08-12Read: 0
In the field of plastic processing and application,Ball indentation Rockwell hardnessLike a precise "hardness scale", it quantifies the deformation resistance of plastic materials by measuring the indentation depth of steel ball indenters under specific loads. This testing method designed for non rigid materials is widely used for quality control of plastic pipes, films, engineering plastic parts and other products due to its convenient operation and intuitive results, and has become an important indicator for measuring the mechanical properties of materials.
On the plastic pipe production line, the Rockwell hardness of the ball indentation is the "first hurdle" to ensure the pressure resistance performance of the pipeline. PVC water supply pipes need to withstand certain external impacts and internal water pressure, and their hardness value is usually required to be above 80HRR. During testing, a steel ball with a diameter of 12.7mm was pressed into the outer wall of the pipe for 5 seconds under a 100N preload and a total load of 600N, and the indentation depth was measured. Through online hardness testing, the extrusion temperature and pressure parameters can be adjusted in real time, reducing the fluctuation range of product hardness to ± 3HRR.

In the design and selection of engineering plastic parts, the ball indentation Rockwell hardness provides a key basis for material matching. The PP/EP blend material used for car bumpers needs to have sufficient hardness (usually requiring 60-70HRL) while maintaining a certain level of toughness, in order to balance impact resistance and surface scratch resistance. Testing has found that materials with a hardness exceeding 75HRL have a cantilever beam impact strength that decreases by more than 20% and are prone to brittle fracture during collisions. A certain automotive parts factory optimized the formula to stabilize the material hardness at around 65HRL, which not only meets the dimensional stability requirements during assembly, but also ensures the impact resistance during use.
In the evaluation of packaging performance of plastic film, the Rockwell hardness of ball indentation also plays an important role. PET film used for food packaging requires appropriate hardness to maintain packaging stiffness while avoiding easy folding caused by excessive hardness. By using a small load Rockwell hardness test (total load of 100N), it is possible to accurately distinguish the hardness differences of thin films of different thicknesses. The data shows that PET film with a thickness of 25 μ m usually has a hardness of 50-60HRM. If the hardness is lower than 45HRM, the film is prone to tensile deformation on high-speed packaging machines, resulting in a 15% increase in sealing misalignment rate. By controlling the traction ratio in the blow molding process, the uniformity of film hardness can be increased by 15%, significantly improving the stability of the packaging production line.
From daily necessities to industrial components, plastic ball indentation Rockwell hardness provides scientific quantitative data to guide material selection, process optimization, and quality judgment of plastic products, becoming an important technical means to ensure product performance in the plastic industry.
