After mixing the water sample and masking agent, ammonia, which exists in the form of free ammonia or ammonium ions, reacts with salicylic acid colorimetric reagent in alkaline environment and the presence of sensitizer to form a colored complex. The analyzer detects the change in color and converts this change into ammonia nitrogen value for output. The amount of colored complex generated is equivalent to the amount of ammonia nitrogen.
