10 valuable experiences on gas source selection and maintenance for gas chromatography
Date: 2025-11-12Read: 18

Gas chromatography (GC) is one of the widely used techniques in the field of analytical chemistry, and its performance is directly affected by the gas source. The quality and maintenance of gas chromatography gas sources are related to the accuracy and stability of chromatographic separation, ensuring the reliability of experimental results. This article will share 10 valuable experiences in selecting and maintaining gas sources to help improve the efficiency and experimental accuracy of gas chromatographs.

1. Choose the appropriate type of gas source
Gas chromatography gas sources include nitrogen, hydrogen, air, etc. Choosing the appropriate gas source is crucial based on different analysis needs. For example, nitrogen is generally used as a carrier gas, hydrogen is used for flame ionization detectors (FIDs), and air is used for hydrogen flames. Choosing a high-purity and stable gas source is a prerequisite for ensuring the long-term stable operation of the chromatograph.
2. Ensure that the gas purity meets the standards
Different gas purities have a direct impact on chromatographic analysis results. The purity of nitrogen generally needs to reach 99.999%, and hydrogen and air should also meet the corresponding purity standards. Gases with lower purity may contain impurities, which can cause tailing or interference of chromatographic peaks, affecting the accuracy of experimental results.
3. Regularly check the pressure and flow rate of the gas source
The pressure and flow rate of the gas source are directly related to the stability and uniformity of the gas flow inside the chromatographic column. Regularly check whether the pressure of the gas source meets the requirements and whether the flow meter is working properly. High or low pressure can affect the chromatographic separation efficiency, so regular calibration and adjustment of gas source pressure are crucial.
4. Regularly replace the gas source cylinder
The service life of gas cylinders is limited, and over time, the quality of the gas inside the cylinder may decrease, and the gas inside the cylinder may be contaminated. It is recommended to regularly check the expiration date of gas cylinders, especially whether the gas pressure inside the cylinder meets the specified standards. Generally speaking, gas cylinders need to be replaced after one year of use.
5. Install gas filter
It is very important to install gas filters to prevent impurities from entering the chromatographic system and affecting the analysis results. Gas filters can effectively remove moisture, oil, and small particles, avoiding damage to chromatography columns and detectors caused by these impurities. Especially when using hydrogen, installing filters is even more important.
6. Keep the gas source pipeline clean and sealed
The sealing of the gas source pipeline is crucial to the experimental results. Regularly check the gas source connection pipeline to ensure there is no air leakage. In addition, the pipeline should be kept clean to avoid the accumulation of oil and other impurities, and to prevent contamination of the chromatographic system. It is recommended to use specialized cleaning tools to regularly clean the pipeline and prevent contamination sources from entering the instrument.
7. Avoid gas pressure fluctuations
The pressure fluctuation of the gas source can lead to unstable response of the chromatograph, and may even reduce the separation performance of the chromatographic column. The constant pressure of the gas source should be maintained through pressure regulators and stabilizers to avoid experimental errors caused by pressure fluctuations.
8. Regularly check the gas source instrument
The relevant instruments of the gas source, such as flow meters, pressure gauges, etc., need to be regularly inspected and calibrated. The accuracy of the instrument directly affects the effectiveness of the gas source, and errors can lead to inaccurate experimental data. Instrument calibration should be conducted once a month to ensure its accuracy meets the requirements.
9. Use appropriate gas pipeline materials
Choosing the appropriate pipeline material for the gas source is very important. For high-purity gases, it is recommended to use stainless steel pipelines to avoid the pollution risk that plastic pipelines may bring. High quality materials should also be selected for pipeline connectors to avoid gas leaks caused by poor sealing or aging.
10. Keep long-term maintenance records of the gas source
The maintenance of the gas source is not only about regular inspection and replacement, but also a very important part of recording. Make detailed records for each maintenance of gas sources, replacement of gas cylinders, gas quality testing, etc., to facilitate later problem identification and traceability of historical maintenance situations. This not only helps with the stable operation of the instrument, but also provides effective troubleshooting basis in case of problems.
