02 Application background knowledge

The Hitachi FT series coating thickness gauges are all top illuminated structures, which not only solve the problems of unevenness and focusing on the sample measurement surface, but also provide structural convenience for automatic focusing and measurement functions. The overhead instrument must be driven by the Z-axis to lift and lower the sample platform and measuring head.

03 On site Service Plan

After Hitachi engineers arrived at the customer site and powered on, a Z-axis alarm occurred during the initialization process. Following the common faults of Z-axis alarms, the fault could not be eliminated even after cleaning the Z-axis sensor, guide rail, and screw. Then, when manually rotating the motor, it was found that the resistance was greater than the normal resistance, and it was suspected that there was a transmission abnormality at the connection between the Z-axis screw and the motor gear. The engineer disassembled the closed joint mechanism between the Z-axis and the motor and found that the gears were severely worn, and the contact surface was dry and without lubricating oil. The wear caused excessive gaps, and the lubricating oil dried up, resulting in excessive friction. The motor could not drive the Z-axis to operate normally. The engineer adjusted the position of the motor gear and Z-axis screw, reapplied lubricating oil, and the fault was eliminated after starting up.

04 Engineer Tips

After long-term use, irregular addition of lubricating oil to each bearing of the coating thickness gauge can lead to the occurrence of various bearing alarms. It is recommended to entrust professional engineers from the manufacturer to conduct regular annual inspections, identify and eliminate hidden dangers of various alarms inside the instrument in a timely manner, and ensure the normal operation of the instrument.
