Advantage analysis of Vickers hardness tester
Date: 2025-07-30Read: 0

As a high-precision hardness testing instrument, Vickers hardness tester occupies an important position in the field of material testing with its unique design and testing principle, especially in the hardness testing of small parts, thin materials, and high hardness materials, showing significant advantages.

1、 Can adapt to various materials and hardness ranges, with a wide range of applications
The Vickers hardness tester uses a diamond indenter with a regular square pyramid shape. By applying different test forces (from a few grams to tens of kilograms), it can accurately measure the hardness of almost all metal materials, whether they are soft aluminum alloys, copper alloys, hard quenched steel, hard alloys, or even brittle materials such as ceramics and glass. In contrast, the Rockwell hardness tester is suitable for materials within a specific hardness range, the Brinell hardness tester is more suitable for softer materials with larger indentation, and the Vickers hardness tester has almost no such limitations, which can meet diverse testing needs.
2、 High testing accuracy and good data repeatability
The testing result of Vickers hardness is obtained by measuring the diagonal length of the indentation and calculating it according to the formula, which is less affected by human factors. At the same time, the indenter shape of the Vickers hardness tester is regular, the indentation contour is clear, and it is easy to measure accurately, so the accuracy of the test data is high. Under the same conditions, measuring the hardness value of the same part multiple times has a small deviation and good data repeatability, which can provide reliable data support for material quality control and performance research.
3、 There are various types of measurable samples, which have minimal damage to the samples
The indentation of Vickers hardness tester is relatively small, especially under low load, the indentation diameter is usually only a few micrometers to tens of micrometers, so the damage to the sample is minimal, suitable for hardness testing of precision parts, thin sheets, coatings, and surface layers after heat treatment. In addition, for samples with complex shapes, as long as the indentation plane is flat, the Vickers hardness tester can also perform effective measurements, such as hardness testing of gear tooth surfaces, bearing raceways, and other parts.
4、 The hardness value has uniformity, making it easy to compare under different conditions
A significant characteristic of Vickers hardness is that within a certain range of test forces, the Vickers hardness value of the material is fixed and independent of the magnitude of the test force. This means that for the same material, no matter how much test force is used for testing, the obtained Vickers hardness values are basically the same, which facilitates comparative analysis of the hardness of the material under different laboratories and test conditions. This advantage is particularly important in the research and development, production, and quality inspection processes of materials.
5、 Can detect the hardness of extremely thin surfaces and small areas
For some materials that have undergone surface treatment, such as nitride layers, carburizing layers, coatings, etc., their surface thickness is often very thin, usually only a few micrometers to tens of micrometers. The Vickers hardness tester can accurately measure the hardness of these extremely thin surfaces by selecting a smaller test force to create small indentations on them, without affecting the substrate material. This advantage has led to the widespread application of Vickers hardness testers in the field of surface engineering.
Summary: Vickers hardness tester is the preferred choice for high-precision hardness testing
In summary, the Vickers hardness tester plays an irreplaceable role in many fields such as aerospace, automotive manufacturing, electronics industry, materials science, etc., due to its wide applicability, high testing accuracy, good data repeatability, minimal damage to the sample, and ability to detect hardness in small areas. Whether it is quality inspection of raw materials or performance evaluation of components, Vickers hardness tester can provide accurate and reliable hardness data, providing strong guarantee for product quality control and technical research and development.
