ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer) is a highly sensitive analytical instrument widely used for element analysis in fields such as environment, geology, biology, and materials. The following are the basic operating steps of ICP-MS:1. Instrument preparation
-
Pre-start inspectionEnsure sufficient supply of argon and helium, normal circulation of cooling water, opening of ventilation system, and stable operation of vacuum pump.
-
Turn on the deviceTurn on the power, circulating cooling water, and gas valves in sequence, start the computer, and run the ICP-MS control software.
2. Instrument preheating and tuning
-
preheatAfter starting the instrument, it needs to be preheated for at least 30 minutes to ensure plasma stability.
-
tuningUse tuning solution (such as Li, Y, Ce, Tl, Co mixed solution) for instrument tuning, optimize parameters such as sensitivity, oxide and double charge ion yield to ensure optimal instrument performance.
3. Sample preparation
-
Sample processingThe sample should be a dilute acidic aqueous solution (such as 2% HNO3) to avoid containing hydrofluoric acid, organic matter, and particulate matter. Solid samples need to be converted into liquid form through methods such as digestion.
-
diluteUnknown concentration samples need to be diluted to an appropriate range (such as below 100 ppb) to avoid contaminating the detector.
4. Preparation of standard solution and internal standard
-
standard solutionPrepare a standard solution ranging from 0.1 ppb to 50 ppb based on the range of analyzed elements to establish a calibration curve.
-
Internal standard solutionSelect internal standard elements (such as In, Bi, Rh) with similar ionization characteristics to the tested element, and correct for matrix effects and signal drift.
5. Sample analysis
-
Set parametersSet analysis methods in the software, including element list, integration time, sampling depth, etc.
-
Injection analysisPlace the sample in the automatic sampler and initiate the analysis sequence. Observe the plasma state to ensure stable operation.
-
data collectionThe instrument automatically collects ion signals and generates mass spectra.
6. Data Processing and Reporting
-
data processingUse software for background subtraction, quantitative analysis, generate calibration curves, and calculate sample concentrations.
-
Result verificationVerify the accuracy of the results through methods such as spiked recovery and parallel sample analysis.
-
Report GenerationOrganize sample information, experimental conditions, analysis results, and quality control data to generate a report.
7. Instrument maintenance
-
Shut downAfter the analysis is completed, rinse the system with deionized water, turn off the plasma, gas, and cooling water, and finally turn off the power.
-
routine maintenanceRegularly clean the atomizer, replace the pump tube, check the gas purity and cooling water quality to ensure long-term stable operation of the instrument.
