Daily maintenance and calibration of small animal CT systems: ensuring long-term imaging stability
Date: 2025-04-16Read: 4
The imaging quality and stability of small animal CT systems are directly related to the reliability of scientific research data. Standardized daily maintenance and regular system calibration are key to ensuring the long-term stable operation of equipment. The following will explain from three aspects: maintenance points, calibration methods, and common problems.
1. Key points of daily maintenance
(1) X-ray system maintenance
X-ray tube maintenance: Check the operating status of the cooling system (water-cooled/air-cooled) to avoid overheating; Regularly clean the pipe sleeve filter to prevent dust accumulation from affecting heat dissipation.
High voltage generator monitoring: Record the stability of kV/mA output, abnormal fluctuations may indicate cable aging or power supply issues.
(2) Mechanical system maintenance
Lubrication of rotating bearings: The scanning bed and detector rotating mechanism need to be regularly lubricated (using specialized grease) to avoid motion artifacts caused by mechanical wear.
Laser positioning system calibration: Ensure that the animal positioning laser coincides with the scanning center to reduce sample placement errors.
(3) Detector and data link inspection
Cleaning of flat panel detector: Use a dust-free cloth to wipe the surface to prevent dust from causing image stripe artifacts.
Data transmission testing: Regularly verify the data integrity from the detector to the workstation to avoid frame loss during transmission.
(4) Environmental control
Temperature and humidity management: Maintain laboratory temperature (20-25 ℃) and humidity (40-60%) to prevent electronic components from getting damp or overheated.
Earthquake prevention measures: The equipment should be placed on a stable table, away from vibration sources such as centrifuges and ventilation equipment.
2. Regular calibration items
(1) Geometric calibration
Mold scanning: Use a calibrated mold containing metal beads with known spacing to verify spatial resolution (usually ≤ 50 μ m) and geometric distortion.
Rotation center correction: By detecting the deviation of the rotation axis through concentric circular molds, software compensates for mechanical errors.
(2) Density calibration
HU value calibration: Scan phantoms containing materials of different densities (water, air, bone equivalents) to ensure accurate linear relationship of CT values (HU).
(3) Performance verification
Uniformity test: Scan a uniform water model, and the CT value difference between the center and edge of the image should be less than 10HU.
Noise level assessment: The standard deviation (SD) of noise in water model images should comply with the manufacturer's standards (usually<50HU).
(4) Radiation dose monitoring
Dosimeter measurement: Regularly check the scanning dose (such as CTDI phantom) to ensure compliance with the low-dose principle of animal ethics requirements.
3. Common problems and solutions
Problem symptoms: circular artifacts in the image, decreased spatial resolution, scan interruption errors, and CT value drift.
Possible reasons: inconsistent detector pixel response, X-ray tube focus drift or filter contamination, data transmission interruption or overheating protection, detector gain drift.
Solution: Perform flat field correction to replace the X-ray tube or clean the filter, check the network cable connection or cooling system, and recalibrate the density curve.
4. Maintenance cycle recommendations
Daily: Check the system startup self-test status and clean the scanning bed.
Weekly: Test laser positioning and backup calibration parameters.
Monthly: Perform geometric and density calibration to verify resolution.
Quarterly: Comprehensive testing (including high-voltage systems) is conducted by engineers.
5. Summary
Through preventive maintenance and standardized calibration, the lifespan of small animal CT systems can be significantly extended, ensuring accurate and reliable imaging data. Suggest establishing maintenance logs, developing maintenance plans based on manufacturer manuals and industry standards, and strengthening operator training to identify potential faults early.
