What factors can affect the accuracy of ultrasonic thickness gauges
Date: 2025-12-24Read: 1
The accuracy of ultrasonic thickness gauges is influenced by multiple factors, including instrument performance, characteristics of the measured object, environmental conditions, and operating standards. The following analysis will focus on key factors:
1、 Material characteristics and surface state
1. Sound velocity variation: The sound velocity of a material decreases with increasing temperature (for example, for metal materials, the sound velocity decreases by about 1% for every 100 ℃ increase in temperature). If the instrument is not temperature compensated or there is a large temperature difference between the calibration environment and the actual temperature, it will result in thickness calculation deviation. For example, specialized probes (300-600 ℃) and high-temperature coupling agents should be used in high-temperature environments.
2. Surface roughness and cleanliness: A rough surface can weaken the ultrasonic reflection signal and even prevent the reception of echoes. For surfaces covered by rust or coatings, it is necessary to improve the coupling effect by grinding, removing oxides or paint layers. In addition, attachments such as sediments and corrosion pits may alter the propagation path of sound waves, resulting in irregular fluctuations in readings or erroneous stacking of thickness values.
3. Material uniformity and structure: Coarse grained materials such as castings and austenitic steels experience signal attenuation due to grain scattering, requiring the use of low-frequency probes (such as 2.5MHz) to enhance penetration. Composite materials or layered structures may generate multiple echo interferences, and internal defects need to be confirmed through ultrasonic testing.
2、 Instrument performance and parameter settings
1. Probe selection and adaptability: Special probes (such as 6mm small-diameter tube probes) are required for measuring small diameters or curved surfaces to reduce beam divergence and poor coupling issues. High frequency probe (5-10MHz) has high resolution but weak penetration, suitable for thin parts; Low frequency probes (1-2.5MHz) have strong penetration and are suitable for thick or coarse-grained materials.
2. Calibration and maintenance: Regularly use standard test blocks to calibrate sound velocity and zero position, especially after replacing materials or probes. Surface wear of the probe (such as aging of acrylic resin) will reduce sensitivity, and it needs to be sanded or replaced in a timely manner.
3、 Environment and operating standards
1. Temperature and humidity: Special temperatures not only affect the speed of sound, but may also lead to the failure of coupling agents (such as the loss of ordinary coupling agents at high temperatures). High temperature/low temperature resistant couplant (such as silicone grease or gel) shall be selected according to the working conditions, and the high-temperature parts shall be measured after the cooling time is extended.
2. Electromagnetic interference and vibration: Strong magnetic fields may interfere with instrument circuits, so it is necessary to stay away from electrical equipment or use shielded cables. The vibration environment can easily cause the probe to shift. It is recommended to use a magnetic bracket to fix it or take the average of multiple measurements.
4、 Error control in special scenarios
1. Multilayer materials and heterogeneous structures: Stacked materials or composite layers need to distinguish between single-layer and total thickness, for example, using a twin probe to measure single-layer thickness to avoid misjudgment caused by differences in acoustic impedance.
2. High temperature and high pressure environment: When measuring high temperature equipment, it is necessary to ensure shutdown and pressure reduction, and use water-cooled probes or remote control to ensure safety.
Optimizing the accuracy of ultrasonic thickness gauges requires systematic management of the aforementioned factors. By reasonably selecting equipment, standardizing operating procedures, regular calibration, and environmental intervention, the reliability of measurement can be significantly improved, providing scientific basis for industrial testing.
