Portable methane converters also require regular maintenance
Date: 2025-06-14Read: 1
Portable methane converterIt is a commonly used equipment in laboratories, mainly used to convert carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into methane (CH4) for gas chromatography analysis by hydrogen flame ionization detector (FID). The working principle is based on the methane reaction, which uses nickel catalyst as a catalyst to reduce CO and CO2 to CH4 under the protection of hydrogen gas (H2). The specific process is to fill the converter with nickel catalyst, and use a temperature controller to introduce a certain proportion of hydrogen gas into the stainless steel tube filled with catalyst at 360-380 ℃, so as to convert CO and CO2 into CH4. In this way, trace amounts of CO and CO2 in various gases can be analyzed using gas chromatography with FID detector, just like CH4.
  Portable methane converterRegular maintenance:
1. Replace the filter screen and filter: Regularly replace the filter screen and filter of the converter according to the frequency of use and environmental conditions. The function of filters and screens is to prevent dust, impurities, and moisture from entering the interior of the equipment. If not replaced for a long time, it will lead to a decrease in filtration efficiency and affect the performance of the equipment. It is generally recommended to check the condition of the filter screen and filter every certain working time (such as every 50 hours of use) or once a month. If blockage or damage is found, it should be replaced in a timely manner.
2. Check the gas system: Regularly inspect the gas system of the methane converter, including components such as gas pipes, valves, flow meters, etc. Check whether the trachea is cracked, aged, or blocked, whether the valves are flexible and reliable, and whether the flow meter is accurate. Soap water or other leak detection tools can be used to detect leaks in the gas system to ensure that there are no gas leaks. For problems discovered, relevant components should be repaired or replaced in a timely manner.
3. Maintenance of burner: The burner is one of the key components of the methane converter and requires regular maintenance. Clean the nozzle of the burner and carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, check the wear of the electrodes and ignition performance. If the nozzle is blocked, a dedicated needle can be used to clear it; If the electrode is severely worn, it needs to be replaced in a timely manner. At the same time, check whether the air damper adjustment device of the burner is flexible to ensure sufficient air quality during combustion.
4. Calibration sensors: Regularly calibrate temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and flow sensors of the conversion furnace to ensure the accuracy of measurement data. The calibration process can refer to the equipment's user manual or the calibration method provided by the manufacturer. Generally speaking, sensors need to be calibrated at regular intervals (such as quarterly) or after major equipment maintenance.
5. Check the electrical system: Check the electrical system of the converter, including wires, cables, terminal blocks, and other components. Check whether the wires are damaged, aged, or short circuited, and whether the wiring terminals are loose. Use tools such as insulation resistance meters to test the insulation performance of electrical systems and ensure electrical safety. For problems discovered, they should be repaired or replaced in a timely manner to avoid electrical accidents.
