Improving purity and optimizing processes: Exploring the application secrets of oxygen argon dedicated columns
Date: 2025-12-17Read: 1
Oxygen argon dedicated columnIt is a high-performance chromatographic column used for the specialized separation and detection of oxygen (O ₂) and argon (Ar) in gas chromatography (GC) or gas analysis systems. It is widely used in air separation units, high-purity gas production, semiconductor manufacturing, metallurgy, laboratory gas purity analysis, and environmental monitoring. Due to the extremely similar physical and chemical properties of oxygen and argon (molecular weights of 32 and 40, boiling points close, and both being non-polar diatomic/monatomic gases), conventional chromatography columns are difficult to achieve effective separation. Therefore, special packing and optimized structure of dedicated columns are required.
Oxygen argon dedicated columnUsually, molecular sieve based stationary phases (such as 5A or 13X molecular sieves) are used, with pore size precisely controlled at about 5 Å (0.5 nm), which can be screened based on the dynamic diameter differences of gas molecules: oxygen molecules (about 3.46 Å) can enter the pores and be retained, while slightly larger argon atoms (about 3.40 Å, but show differences in adsorption behavior due to being single atoms and different polarizations) have different elution rates, thus achieving baseline separation. In order to improve the separation efficiency and peak symmetry, modern oxygen argon columns often use pre aging treatment, metal or fused silica capillary columns, and strictly control the filling uniformity and column temperature program.
Oxygen argon dedicated columnScope of application:
1. Industrial gas purity analysis
Determination of trace oxygen and argon in industrial hydrogen gas (based on standards such as GB/T 3634.1-2006)
Detection of trace impurities (especially argon) in high-purity gases such as high-purity oxygen and high-purity hydrogen
2. Electronic grade gas analysis
Accurate analysis of ppb level trace argon in electronic gases (such as high-purity oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, etc.) in industries such as semiconductors and microelectronics
3. Special gas quality control
Used for quality control of medical gases, standard gases, mixed gases, and other products to ensure that the oxygen/argon ratio meets specifications
4. Research and Environmental Monitoring
Used for trace gas component research or process gas monitoring in the fields of environmental protection, biology, pharmaceuticals, etc
