Principle and Application of Infrared Timing Technology in Automatic Ubbelohde Viscometer
Date: 2025-07-21Read: 1
In the fields of rheology and polymer science, the Ubbelohde viscometer is a classic instrument for measuring liquid viscosity. Its core principle is to calculate the viscosity value by measuring the flow time of the liquid in the capillary tube. Traditional manual operation relies on manual stopwatch timing, which has limitations such as large human error and poor repeatability. With the development of automation technology, infrared sensing technology has been introduced into Ubbelohde viscometers, achieving millisecond level precision timing of flow time and becoming a key breakthrough in modern viscosity measurement.
1、 The core components of an infrared timing system
The infrared timing system of the automatic Ubbelohde viscometer consists of an infrared emitting module, a receiving sensor, a signal processing unit, and a synchronous control circuit. Its core design is based on the linear propagation characteristics of infrared radiation: when liquid flows through a capillary tube, the liquid surface periodically blocks the optical path between the infrared emitter and receiver installed on both sides of the capillary tube. For example, when measuring polystyrene toluene solution, the solution flows from the storage sphere into the lower sphere through a capillary tube, and an infrared signal interruption is triggered every 1 centimeter of liquid level drop. The system calculates the flow time by capturing the time interval between the two interruptions.
2、 Timing principle and error control
This technology adopts a dual light curtain cross detection mode, forming a three-dimensional detection area through two sets of infrared sensors. The timing starts when the liquid flows through the first set of sensors and stops when it flows through the second set, effectively avoiding false triggering caused by liquid level fluctuations. Taking the viscosity test of nylon 6/formic acid solution as an example, under constant temperature conditions of 25 ℃, the infrared system can achieve a timing accuracy of 0.001 seconds, reducing the timing error by 97% compared to traditional stopwatches. The system also has a built-in temperature compensation algorithm, which automatically corrects the fluctuation of liquid viscosity with temperature changes by monitoring the temperature of the constant temperature water bath in real time.
3、 Integration advantages of automation systems
Modern automatic Ubbelohde viscometers deeply integrate infrared timing with automatic sampling, temperature control, and data acquisition systems. For example, in the molecular weight determination of polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution, the system can automatically complete the entire process from solution injection, constant temperature equilibrium to multiple dilution measurements, and shorten the single testing cycle from 2 hours in traditional methods to 20 minutes. The high-frequency sampling capability of infrared sensors (up to 10kHz) ensures accurate capture of rapidly flowing liquids, making them particularly suitable for measuring low viscosity solvents such as water and ethanol.
4、 Technical validation and industry application
Verified by the International Center for Standardization, the Ubbelohde viscometer using infrared timing has a deviation of less than 2% from the light scattering method when measuring the viscosity average molecular weight of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), meeting the requirements of ASTM D445 standard. In the field of petrochemicals, this technology has been applied to online monitoring of lubricant viscosity. By collecting real-time flow time data at different temperatures, the viscosity index (VI) can be quickly calculated to guide lubricant formulation optimization. In the biopharmaceutical industry, infrared timing systems provide a highly reproducible solution for viscosity analysis of protein solutions, aiding in the study of molecular interactions in new drug development.

The introduction of infrared timing technology has upgraded the Ubbelohde viscometer from a traditional manual instrument to an intelligent analysis platform. Its millisecond level timing accuracy, full process automation control, and multi parameter integration capability not only enhance the scientificity and efficiency of viscosity measurement, but also provide key technical support for precision analysis in fields such as polymer materials, petrochemicals, and biomedicine. With the continuous advancement of sensor technology, infrared timing systems are evolving towards higher accuracy and stronger anti-interference capabilities, driving viscosity measurement technology to a new stage of development.
