The impact of the epidemic on society
Before formally discussing the impact and opportunities of the epidemic on the printing industry, I would like to first talk about the impact of the epidemic on society from three dimensions: service industry, manufacturing industry, and individuals.
Firstly, the impact of the epidemic on the service industry. Currently, a large number of service industries engage in face-to-face transactions. Due to the epidemic, Wuhan is currently under lockdown and the whole country is on holiday. In the short term, the impact of the epidemic on the overall service industry is significant. Secondly, the impact of the epidemic on the manufacturing industry. The manufacturing industry does not require face-to-face transactions like the service industry, and can be based on e-commerce transactions, but production is a very important link in the manufacturing industry. Due to extended holidays and epidemic prevention arrangements, many factories are unable to resume work, especially in the printing and customization industry where most production is done on a per order basis, unlike other industries that rely on inventory. Therefore, the impact on the manufacturing industry is mainly due to the production impact caused by the resumption of work. Afterwards, it is the impact of the epidemic on individuals. In the long run, whether it is the impact of the epidemic on the service industry or the manufacturing industry, it will lead to cost cutting, layoffs, or even bankruptcy of enterprises, ultimately resulting in a decline in personal consumption ability. In addition, the impact of this epidemic on individuals cannot be ruled out as it may bring about changes in values and social perspectives.
Difficulties make a country prosperous, and the impact of this epidemic may not necessarily be negative. At least it has brought positive impacts in increasing people's cohesion, grassroots organizational capacity, and government's ability to manage emergencies, leaving us with room for reflection.
New opportunities for the printing industry under the epidemic
This epidemic will also create some new opportunities, and how to combine these new opportunities with industry development is also the focus of our thinking.
In 1999, the "72 hour Internet Survival" contest was held in China. At that time, the competition was held simultaneously in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Twelve volunteer testers were selected from thousands of applicants and sent to different places to start a 72 hour "online survival" test. Their living space is a standard hotel room, and their communication with the outside world is only a computer with internet access. This competition caused a huge sensation, and 1999 is also considered the first year of China's e-commerce development. In the following 20 years, e-commerce has flourished in China.
Not many people know about the Internet Survival Contest until now, but everyone should be familiar with JD and Taobao. In 2003, Liu Qiangdong, who was selling electronic products in the market, switched to online sales due to the inability to operate due to SARS, and eventually gave birth to the now well-known JD.com. In 2003, Alibaba's employees were infected with SARS during the Canton Fair, which required all employees to work from home in isolation. It was also at this time that Jack Ma launched the Taobao platform for C2C against public opinion.
Today, we live in isolation at home when facing the epidemic, which is quite similar to the Internet survival contest that year. At that time, the core of the competition was to link basic goods and services based on the information Internet with individuals as carriers. Looking back today, we will feel that this competition was very easy. But more than 20 years ago, most of the four links and one delivery had not yet been established, and the new Postal Law in 2009 only defined express delivery. According to statistics, as of December 1999, the number of internet users in China was less than 10 million, which means that there was less than 1 internet user per 100 people, and all of them were PC based internet users.
After so many years, we think it is normal to buy things, order takeout and take a taxi online. But after the outbreak of this epidemic, we found that there is still much room for optimization in non-contact trading, offline data online, unmanned basic services, Internet based traditional industries, etc., which also brings some new opportunities for the development of the printing industry.
Firstly, on the production side, the printing industry will accelerate its transformation towards more advanced modern manufacturing fields. Especially for enterprises that previously relied heavily on manual labor, they will inevitably accelerate the elimination of high manual and inefficient products, concentrate their advantages on core products, upgrade intelligent manufacturing equipment, optimize product lines, and ultimately achieve a more efficient and intelligent transformation of modern manufacturing industry. In the process of transformation, enterprises must consider their business models. Investing in intelligent manufacturing, information connectivity, the Internet of Things, and energy conservation and environmental protection can improve their ability to resist risks, and will also become opportunities for the manufacturing side to extend in the direction of modern manufacturing transformation. I believe that enterprises that have made arrangements and plans in these areas will definitely gain more market opportunities after this epidemic. Secondly, on the business side, enterprises' Internet based connectivity opportunities will be greatly increased. The Internet Survival Contest mentioned earlier and JD and Taobao, which were born in the SARS epidemic in 2003, actually used the information Internet to solve the personal information connection. So far, although the proportion of clothing, books and 3C products based on personal consumption in e-commerce transactions in China has been very high and has advantages, in fact, the transactions of enterprise entities in the Internet are very limited.
The main consumers in our printing industry are enterprises, and the proportion of e-commerce transactions in the printing industry is still very low. In this epidemic, we can only connect online. It is expected that the travel behavior representing the business connection of enterprises will be greatly reduced in a period of time, but the opportunities for Internet based enterprise connection will be greatly increased. In addition, if the time is ripe, the application of blockchain technology in the printing industry will also accelerate its development, as it involves enterprise connections, transactions, cooperation, and other aspects that are not as simple as buying a mobile phone online.
Therefore, online platforms based on the printing industry supply chain and connecting peripheral services such as raw materials, packaging design, advertising, etc. will usher in development opportunities, and enterprises that are well positioned to participate in coordination and connection will also share a share.
In addition, based on the experience of the SARS epidemic in 2003, suppressed demands will experience a retaliatory growth after the epidemic, and some of our competitors will naturally be eliminated in this crisis. Of course, the prerequisite for obtaining this opportunity is that we can still live, and only by surviving can we have greater opportunities for development.
All great century old enterprises have experienced two world wars. And we are just experiencing an epidemic. This epidemic is both a crisis and a turning point for each and every one of us. The money earned through opportunities will eventually be lost through strength; The money lost due to opportunities will eventually be earned back through strength. Blessings to everyone who faces the crisis positively and turns it into a turning point.
