Multi functional scanning probe microscope can provide high-resolution surface imaging
Date: 2025-06-15Read: 2
Multi functional scanning probe microscope is a high-resolution surface analysis tool that combines scanning probe microscopy (SPM) technology with multiple other functions. It has ultra-high spatial resolution and can detect surface morphology and local physical and chemical properties at the nanoscale. It also has multiple measurement modes and is suitable for research in multiple fields such as physics, chemistry, and biology. The advantage lies in its ability to not only provide surface imaging of traditional scanning probe microscopes, but also perform multifunctional testing in areas such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), current, magnetism, thermal conductivity, etc.

Multi functional scanning probe microscopeThe main components of:
1. Scanning probe: The probe is the core component of a scanning probe microscope. It is usually composed of very sharp metal or ceramic materials, with a sharp radius that can reach the nanometer level. The shape, tip size, material, and other factors of the probe can all affect the accuracy and quality of the measurement.
2. Scanning platform: The scanning platform is the part that supports the sample and can achieve three-dimensional micro precision movement. The platform is usually driven by high-precision motors, which can achieve small displacements of the sample in the X, Y, and Z directions to scan the entire sample surface.
3. Laser reflection system: In AFM mode, the laser beam can accurately measure the small displacement changes of the probe through the reflection mirror on the probe, thereby obtaining the height information of the sample surface.
4. Controller and data acquisition system: The control system is responsible for adjusting scanning parameters (such as scanning rate, distance between probe and sample, etc.), and processing and analyzing the collected data. Data acquisition systems typically combine high-sensitivity amplifiers and digital instruments to convert the interaction information between probes and samples into computer recognizable signals.
5. Functional modules: Special functional modules include measurement modules for electricity, magnetism, thermodynamics, etc. These modules can be installed in microscope systems to enable switching and testing of different measurement modes.
The main functions of a multifunctional scanning probe microscope are:
1. Surface morphology measurement: It can provide high-resolution surface imaging and reveal the microstructure of the surface. By using AFM mode, three-dimensional images of surface morphology can be obtained with a resolution of sub nanometer level.
2. Local force measurement: In AFM mode, the interaction force between the probe tip and the sample surface affects the movement of the probe, and the change in this force is measured through a feedback control system. By using the force distance curve, the mechanical properties such as elastic modulus and adhesion force of the sample can be obtained.
3. Electrical and magnetic measurements: can measure electrical properties such as local current, potential, and local conductivity. In STM mode, electronic structure information of the sample surface can be obtained; The magnetic measurement mode can reveal the local magnetic structure of the material, such as the distribution and interaction of magnetic particles.
4. Thermal conductivity and heat conduction: By measuring the thermoelectric effect, the thermal conductivity of materials can be evaluated. The difference in thermal conductivity between different materials is of great significance at the nanoscale, especially in the field of nanotechnology, where precise measurement of thermal properties can guide the design and application of new materials.
5. Chemical composition analysis: Combined with other techniques such as scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), surface chemical composition analysis can be performed to monitor the chemical reaction process of the sample through local electrochemical reactions.
