Portable Leaf Area MeterIt is a portable device used for rapid, accurate, and non-destructive measurement of plant leaf area and related parameters, widely used in the fields of agriculture, forestry, meteorology, and ecology research. Its core functions include measuring morphological parameters such as leaf area, leaf length, leaf width, perimeter, aspect ratio, and shape factor. Some models can also synchronously record auxiliary data such as environmental humidity and latitude and longitude. The instrument is based on the principle of photoelectric conversion, capturing the blade contour through a built-in optical system, and combining image processing technology to automatically separate the background and target object, ensuring measurement accuracy.
This device adopts a lightweight design and supports in vivo and ex vivo blade measurement. The operation process is simple: users only need to lay the blades flat on the measurement platform or clamp them in place, and simply touch the button to complete data collection. Some high-end models are equipped with full-color touch screens, which can intuitively display blade contours and analysis results, and support Bluetooth, Type-C interface or APP connection to achieve data cloud synchronization and export. In addition, the instrument has an adaptive design for leaf spine thickness, which can accommodate leaves of different thicknesses and avoid damage to plants.
Portable Leaf Area MeterUsage steps:
1、 Preparation before use
Check the instrument: Ensure that the portable leaf area meter has sufficient power, all components are connected properly, and there is no damage or malfunction.
Calibration instrument: Depending on the requirements of the instrument, calibration operations may be necessary. Generally speaking, it is necessary to turn on the power switch before measurement, press and hold the "TARE" button for calibration, or place the instrument horizontally on the desktop, hold down the [Calibration] button until [0.00g] is displayed, indicating that calibration is complete.
Choose a suitable measurement environment: Try to choose an environment with sufficient and uniform lighting, avoid direct sunlight or shadows blocking the blades, to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results.
2、 Measurement process
Placing blades: The way of placing blades varies for different types of portable leaf area meters.
Scanning Leaf Area Meter: Place the tested leaf steadily into the scanning area, ensuring that the leaf is fully unfolded and does not overlap. The petiole or main vein of the leaf should be parallel or perpendicular to the scanning direction for accurate measurement.
Weighing Leaf Area Meter: First, place the instrument on a horizontal table and press the [Zero] button to reset the reading to zero. Then take a leaf and place it on the weighing platform of the instrument, being careful not to cover the display screen and buttons, and the leaf should not exceed the range of the weighing platform.
Start measuring:
Scanning blade area meter: Pressing the measurement button or activating the scanning function, the instrument will automatically scan and analyze the blades, measure parameters such as blade area, length, width, etc., and display them on the screen.
Weighing blade area meter: Read the blade weight displayed on the instrument, and calculate the blade area based on the predetermined relationship between blade area and weight.
Record data: Timely record the measured blade area and other data in a notebook or spreadsheet for subsequent analysis and processing.
3、 Post use maintenance
Clean the instrument: After the measurement is completed, turn off the power of the instrument. Gently wipe the outer shell and measuring platform of the instrument with a clean soft cloth to remove dust and impurities from the surface and keep the instrument clean.
Storage of instruments: Put the portable leaf area meter back into the dedicated instrument box or packaging box, store it properly, and avoid being affected by factors such as collision, moisture, or high temperature.
